Wanted: Pummelo scions and hard wood cuttings

Hello my fellow Californians, does anyone have some pummelo(not grape fruit) scions and hardwood cuttings they can spare. I want to graft onto some of my 1 year old seedlings and try to root some. It doesn't matter what kind of pummelo they are. I can pay or reimburse shipping fees. One more question can I grow tangelo from seeds or they will be a completely different plant since they are hybrids?

At this point, trading citrus scion is a serious no-no because of the asian citrus psyllid. It is a very dangerous bug, and it is believed to have spread through the San Gabriel Valley by backyard growers like us.

Please do us all a favor and do not risk spreading this disease. Stone fruits, avos, apples, pears, have at it, but skip any citrus. If you have a citrus tree you want to switch over to a different variety, you may be able to find some certified psyllid-free wood or buy small certified nursery plants and take your scion from there.

Ok thanks, I wasn't aware of the spreading asian bug disease. I'm most grateful for that info and will reconsider, thank you yukkuri_kame.

I too would like some Warren pear scion wood. I will be happy to pay postage. Please contact me by sending an email to: ChristineJNewell---insert the usual "at" symbol--ymail.com I can exchange wood from my Comice that is doing well and has only been hit a couple of years in the last 10 or so with Fireblight in Maryland. I also have Starking Delicious pear which seems not at all susceptible to Fire Blight over the last 20 years. My two Asian pears all died with a couple of yeras of planting from Fire Blight. Neither of these two varieties are patented so it is OK to exchange wood. Both of these pears are high quality and I find they ripen up if I pick just as they start to show slight change from green to yellow and then refrigerate for two to three weeks. I also have LOTS of oriental persimmons for scion wood. Gwang Yang is my favorite followed by 20th Century, both of which are non-astringent. I also have Sheng which is non-astringent when soft. I have recently grafted Saijo, Ichidagaki, Yemon, Maru, and Miss Kim although these in 2012 are stil too small to provide scion wood. Looking for sweet cherry scion wood for Spring

I have an emperor francis sweet cherry tree. It is the last of my sweet cherry trees left. The rest got destroyed by cherry leaf spot and root rot. Cherry trees are high maintenance because of the deer's preference for cherry, fungal diseases of the leaf and soil, japanese beetles, and the birds and squirrels at harvest. Cage it in with wire to stop the deer. Keep in mind that there are cherry plant patents in effect on many cherry varieties. Consider tart cherries they are a little easier for home gardeners to have a good crop.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pear :( I'd really like to get some European pear for winemaking, but I hear they don't do well in the PNW weather. If you do bring any scions to the GE, the best approach is to cut them in the morning, and put them in a jar of water for the trip so they don't dry out. Cuttings should be last year's new growth (the pieces you'd probably be pruning anyway) generally around the width of a #2 pencil and maybe 10-12 inches in length. Personally I probably wouldn't need more than 2-4 scions of each variety, only because some of my grafts don't take, so I figure if I graft several I'm likely to have at least one survive :) Best, Keith

I have access to a pomegranate that does well in AZ at 4500 ft. Winters get to 20s and maybe a few nights colder. Plant has leafed out. Can send if you send mailer with postage or if you want special priority from post office send enough for me to buy one of those mailer boxes. I have just started to root cutting for myself. Or I can try to make more cuttings and you can contact me in the fall. It is possible we have emailed before. Variety is unknown, dates from 1920s or 1930s and is lighter pink and sweet.

Yeah, I didn't really know about it myself until recently. Definitely has me scared and not interested in investing too much in more citrus, knowing the disease is likely to end up here eventually.

I'm more focused on avocados, apples & stone fruits right now. Diverse systems are more resilient!

As for your tangelo seeds, they will likely not breed true to type, but that's half the fun, isn't it?

I'm one of those eccentric gardeners that talks to their plants in the belief that they listen. In particular, I have conversations with my seedlings about what kind of qualities I would love for them to express, and I also try to listen what kind of conditions they would like me to create for them to thrive in.

Seng, You can order budwood from the Citrus Clonal Protection Program for a nominal cost. They have Chandler, Reinking, Sarawak, Mato Buntan, Kao Pan & Thong Dee pummelo budwood (scions) available 3 times a year. The next cutting is June 12, 2013. They also have a lot of information about Huanglongbing & Asian Citrus Physllid. All their budwood is certified HLB & other known pathogens free. There are strict rules that they explain about using & transferring budwood. You can get started here:

Be warned, you do NOT want to break the rules. Some nitwits in the LA area imported some HLB infected budwood from Asia a few years ago. The USDA & CDFA chopped down their trees & fined them. Not so terrible. The lawyers with the California citrus growers then went after them & destroyed their lives. Citrus growing in California is a multi-billion dollar industry. They have no mercy for anyone who might harm the industry however innocently. The regulations are not so difficult to learn & follow. Be smart.

I'm interested in ordering some budwood from CCPP.

The upcoming dates for ordering are Aug. 31st, Sept 30th or October 31st.

Would seem to make sense to do a group order. Anyone interested?

I want small amounts of a wide variety of citrus budwood in order to graft over a large, but sub-par mandarin and a few seedlings. Mostly interested in navel orange, oro blanco grapefruit, kumquat, satsumas and yuzu, but I'm not picky.
