ever hear of severe throat, tongue reaction to turnip green raw?

Hubby blamed his severe reaction to seek treatment because he tasted a leaf and stem from turnip greens straight out of the big wooden box I am presently growing them in....
(years before I had sweet potatoes in the years before.... in that same 3 y 4 foot bin box)
He still feels weak.... they wanted him to take steroids...
I say he could have also had some weed juice or poison ivy on his hand.... or he could have pulled a stem from something else when he was picking it or the kale further away up the property next to various potato plants,etc. also he had put his hand under fence in garden to run the garden hose thru.. or who knows It was dark

Turnip leaves, radish leaves and some others have the same sort of "stinging hairs" as nettles do, and when eaten raw can have an unpleasant effect. It is not a toxic situation, but as with many things, people react differently. Cooking or blanching the leaves will negate this effect, if you must eat them. The hairs on zucchini and cucumber leaves are two that I react badly to.

I have to wonder if there is a possibility that he (or the leaves) could have come in contact with a poison, which was then consumed. The description of the symptoms, though, sounds more like an allergic reaction. In either case, it would not be wise to repeat the experience.

Sherry, your rose's canes actually look very healthy to me. I'm not sure what's going on, but it does look like they may have gone into a form of survival mode. It never hurts to have the soil tested.....but sometimes I wonder if OGR roses can have too much fussing over them and not enough enjoying. I don't have many planted yet....about a dozen or so, but mine have been totally neglected and have become huge and full of blooms. I haven't watered them at all this year either. They've had to survive totally on rainfall. The neglect on my part is because we're finishing up our house and I just don't have the time right now. I remarked to my husband this evening that they must like the cool weather we're having at night. He said they're getting as big as trees.(Hmmm...that would be small trees). All my roses got from me this year was some sour raw milk, coffee grounds, and yogurt or cream that had gotten past it's prime. This was all stuff from a local dairy and not pasteurized. (I don't drink store milk anymore, only the real stuff). The beneficial microbes and whatever else that was in it made them go gangbusters. I'm not saying any of this to brag or make you feel bad. The reason I'm telling you all this is because I used to fuss and fret over my roses at our last home, which took all the fun out of it, and they eventually didn't look as good. Now that my new roses in our new place have had tough love enforced on them, they've had to grow strong roots to find water, and scrounge for whatever nutrients they could then find. I've never had such beautiful roses before. I'm now convinced that an established OGR can survive just fine without supplemental irrigation and excessive amounts of fertilizer, just like Mike Shouppe says. I will say that I feel adding the soured raw dairy must have innoculated the soil around them with microbes that has benefitted them. My roses did drop leaves in August from the intense heat but they bounced back after a month or so. After that I did a very small amount of grooming to clean up any dead wood in them. I don't feel you have nematode damage. Your canes are too healthy for that. You would see sections of your bushes dying. Nor do I feel they have any kind of disease at this point. I think I would give them some Black Cow mixed with the Black Velvet mushroom compost, perhaps a very, very small dose of Rose Tone, and maybe a little water followed by a weak solution of something like Miracle Gro or Mills. I wouldn't do any more than that this late in the season. Then relax and tell them you have confidence they'll perk back up. Sandy

One thing that everyone can begin looking at is this: Biofilms. Biofilms are these gnarly, sticky mats of congealed mucus where candida, bacteria, and other pathogens hide out. If you have reoccurring infections or infections that simply will not go away, then you likely have a biofilm in the infected area. Candida behaves much like a biofilm in this it is systemic and can spread all throughout your body. In order to get rid of biofilms in your nasal pasageways you need to be ready to go to war. The latest remedy, which people are swearing by that works, involves baby shampoo of all things. It's a 'surfactant' I believe is the word. And you use it in nasal irrigation: 1/2 table spoon of it in water, mix it with a neilmed rinse kit, use the saline packet that comes with it, and follow the normal directions. You can follow it with an allicin rinse as well. Allicin is the extract from garlic and has been shown to help breakdown and eliminate biofilms. You basically break open and pour one capsule (do not use the empty capsule) into the mix, add the saline packet, and use as directed. I believe that's it. In the meantime you'll want to think about fortifying your body from biofilms and candida (candida infections can be denoted by fungus growth in toenails, thrush on your tongue and throat, sinus infections, chronic fatigue, depression, dark circles under eyes, and many more). Grapefruit seed extract is really good for this. Buy somme Nutribiotics Grapeseed extract and pour a few drops in water in the AM and PM and drink it down. Also, any kind of citrus fruit extracts you can add to it. Agrisept L could be one of the greatest products of all time for breaking down biofilms in the body. This is just about an all in one anti fungul, bacteria, candida (yeast), and more. Shellfish allergies are no joke. This is the one allergen that is " Adult onset". I grew up on the ocean; and have eaten lots of shrimp. In 2005 I had my first reaction to shellfish. After 2 bites, my throat started to close up. Last night 2018 was my last exposure; and it was more severe. It was cross contamination. I had a steak where a lot of shrimp was on the menu. My steak was cooked where shrimp was cooked. I was in the ER within an hour of exposure via 911 ambulance. Vomiting, sweating out of every pore and blacked out twice. Once hitting a wall so hard everything fell off and broke on the opposite side. The EMTs kept asking me if I have been drinking.... None of my family told them I just ate at a local restaurant and had a severe shellfish allergy. I could not communicate this as I was in and out of consciousness. I am now going to an allergist, getting a medical alert bracelet and an epipen. I guess my family was too freaked to communicate what was going on.

I'm having the best time reading your memories. @Kippy. ROFL boiled lawn. I read it to my husband and he said, "that's just like your pennywort drink but worse". At least my drink has sugar in it to offset the taste. @jillius Durian smells really bad raw. Did the candy smell too? @mushcreek. I had to look up chitlins. OMG hog's intestines and guts. And it's served with my favorite foods, collard greens and fried chicken? Say what!! The name sounds like little critters running around, especially chitterlings. @mgmum Yes..... that's what I have nightmares and wrote about. Uni = RAW sea urchin. It looks like slimy, congealed barf. @flamingfish I used to feel the same way as you about oysters until someone introduced me to the right kinds of oysters. The oysters that I've learned to love are small and sweet. They're slightly chewy like clams and are delicious with lemon and a dash of spicy red sauce. Even my husband likes them and he is afraid of any food that isn't processed or packaged in a box or plastic. Those kinds of oyster are pretty expensive though so we only eat them when in San Francisco at a specific oyster bar during their happy hour. The oysters are $1/each then. @ Bob. if it's really "Cow fetus in placenta sauce" , you definitely beat the goat's eyes. @mrspete. Oooooh a Scots for hubby. I adore Scots and their accent. I will take your advice and NEVER try haggis. I don't need another memory scar. I'm curious as to why he would decide to put something as bristly and uncomfortable as a turnip leaf into his mouth ;-) They are not pleasant even to touch. Regarding the comparison with stinging nettles. AFAIK turnips, radishes etc. just have stiff hairs on the leaves which would cause a physical scratching to tender lips and tongue. Nettles on the other hand have very specialised stinging hairs the tips of which break off on contact and inject histamine and acetylcholine into the skin.

Just remember that everybody is different and you can develop an allergy at any time. Your husband could have eaten something his entire life and one day he no longer can. If it is a true allergy he should stay away as much as possible, or his next encounter might be his last. From what it sounds like he could have been just moments away from anaphylaxis and that needs to be taken very seriously.

I eat them raw while I'm in the garden very often and I have never had a reaction.

But as stated above, it could happen!

Floral, They aren't bristly and uncomfortable when they are young leaves! ;)

It is definitely possible to be allergic to something when it is raw and not be allergic to it when it is cooked, so he may well be allergic. The allergen in question gets denatured in the cooking process and then it is safe to eat. For instance, I've been eating cooked kale for years but ended up going into anaphylactic shock after eating my first kale salad. (That wasn't my first rodeo so I had an Epipen with me). If your husband has allergies to different pollens, then he's much more likely to develop these kinds of reactions. Look into oral allergy syndrome and you might find that he reacts to many of the fruits and vegetables that are known triggers of this.

Depending on the severity of these reactions, he might want to visit an allergist and think about getting shots. If it's just one or two vegetables, then it's probably not worth it but if he starts reacting to just about everything, then shots for all the trees, grasses, and "weeds" can help.

wertach - I only know the ones I grow which are bristly from babies. But there's no tradition of eating turnip greens here so maybe we haven't bred cultivars for smoother leaves since they just get thrown on the compost.

Mine do have bristles when young but they are soft.
