The Dark Garden: Theft

Ever have one of those special plants. This is one I had for years. Not only did they take this one but a 6' Grapefruit tree, 5' Tangrine,a 5' Orange tree and several smaller plants. I guess I'm going to have to do several unkind things to protect my plants. They had to pass thru several hundred vegetables groaning with fruit to get to them. If anybody knows where I can find seeds for a Snowflake Araila please let me know. I haven't seen seeds for them for 16 years.

Dang CW. That sux. So either they had help or they made 3 passes?? Isn't that the way it always is...the war between the 'haves' and the 'have nots'.

Post your pics of the other plants (and describe the containers). Maybe somebody will recognized one of your unique containers while attending the theif's Christmas or holiday party.

Another suggestion would be to put in things that you like, but other people would not recognize or care about. You didn't mention if you were interested in vegetables or flowers. If vegetables, lettuces might be a good masquerade or radishes. Flowers - petunias are pretty hard to pick and walk away with as would be any kind of low ground cover. Herbs might be another thing that are not easily recognized in the front of the house. We're going through this right now with replacing some bushes with berries. I'm giving strong thought on the one side of the house with high traffic of putting in red currants. Not many people know what they are, they are a bit sour if eaten straight off the bush, and I think they will match all the hollies we have with red berries. The blueberries will go into the fenced in backyard that unpredictably has three dogs in it which keeps out anyone who recognizes those.

I haven't had anything stolen, but one year when I planted some dahlberg daisies in the corner of my property, someone whacked them down to the ground. I strongly suspected it was the lawn company hired by the neighbors. These plants weren't in the ground for a week and they got whacked. I think I was more upset at the time I spent planting them more than the cost of them because they're annuals and I had a nice sized patch of them planted there. I would really be ticked off if someone stole a plant I just put out or that I've had for a length of time. okokok - If there is a Big Lots near you, check there for one of those clear green glazing balls. I have seen that color at their store in the past. Not sure what they have now because they're always getting new stuff in, but they have sold gazing balls before and they're pretty reasonable. I see them in their store almost every spring or summer.

My FIL was in his fifth wheel trailer on site until the County told him he couldn't be there. A few weeks later, someone broke into our On Site Container and took $10,000 of materials and tools. The electricians were the worst for asking that I get them something and then not installing it. I still have to swap out the ugly white doorbell button for the ORB one I bought and left for them. I know they saw it because they used the transformer I bought for the doorbell chime they installed... which wasn't the one I left for them to install!

water -hose bib - theft deterrent?

Think the Amazon product is only meant to keep out "kids". Whoever did this actually took the cap off the totally unused pipe that was not operational and put his own hose bib on and caulked it and everything. Now all you have to do is turn the handle. looks like the hose bib could be removed (using a hefty plumbing wrench which apparently this guy has), and handle and all removed, and replaced with a new unlocked one. What keeps one of those locked faucets from being replaced if the guy has plumbing tools/equipment? and option to work undercover of the dark? I guess an indoor shutoff is the only thing. I will be seeing my plumber soon and will talk to them then. Thanks.

I don't understand how people can steal plants... I know of several people that have been victims of orchid theft. What ever happened to respecting others and their property?

Sorry to hear about your loss... I, too, hope you can find replacements.

It's an ugly world we live in these days... it shouldn't be necessary to lock up your plants, for heaven's sake!

Not trying to be a plant snob cuz, I garden totally on a budget. Others are mad because we have something that they do not have. These same people, don't see the hours of work involved so they get jealous and nature takes it's course.

The trick is to mutter about all the work it takes to care for your garden and wonder if it's all worth the effort. Pointing out problems also helps reduce this problem between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'. Also don't make it easy for people to drive up, load up, and drive off.

The plants they sole from GeorgeIII's place will probably not survive. I hope the guilt engulf's the thief (thieves).
