Yet again, another Asparagus Question!

I planted 10 crowns of Purple Passion asparagus on May 2nd and there's still no sign of them. Tomorrow will make 4 weeks since I planted them. It's been really strange weather here in Boston. Colder than normal temps for the most part with a few way hotter days than normal interspersed. We had warm, sunny weather for awhile and all this week it's been 40s and 50s, cold and rainy. I don't know if the colder than normal weather is the problem or what. Maybe the soil hasn't warmed enough? I've read the other threads covering the same issue and I guess I'm just trying to find out when to give it up and plant something else - it's a pretty significant chunk of my garden space that I devoted to the asparagus and if it isn't going to grow I can certainly use the space for something else!

Dont give up till next year! I planted a bunch and I had a "weed" problem in my patch, so I think they were getting choked out. Now I have about 10 shoots coming up, almost 2 months later from planting them....-cass

I planted 10 crowns of Purple Passion & 10 crowns of Jersey Knight. The JK had succulent little shoots starting when I planted them on April 26 (I think) the PP crowns seemed very dry. All of the JK came up quickly.

Only 6 of the PP are up, two of which just came up this week. Although we had a couple of really hot days a few weeks ago, it's been mostly cold up here in VT.

I'd say be patient. (Actually I don't have much choice, the only asparagus at Agway are the same dry PP I got back in APril and all of the online places I know of seem to be sold out)

I've read that you are not to clean the fiilter media...ever. I built my own biofilter...not a skippy but I am about to add one due to all the good things I have heard about them. My pond is in the stage of green pea soup also. I have heard it is a stage that ponds go through this time of year. I am trying the quilt batting. I have it in the top layer of my biofilter and it is catching quite a bit of the algae. I purchased mine from Michaels. I also am using it around my pump. I am letting it run two hours around the pump because it gets pretty dirty quickly. This works great to catch all the small algae. You have to be careful to not catch the batting in the pump. I guess we will see how good it works. I'm thinking about building something that would add some type of barrier between the batting and pump to avoid this problem. Probably a project for tomorrow. Good luck! If anyone has good ideas to get the pond clear I am open to the hints as well!

I can only comment on the Bluestar RNB, which seems not to be a front-runner for you. But as you ask about the hot doors . . . it just has not been any sort of problem for us. The door gets very warm under certain conditions, and you might be surprised if you were to fall against it with palms flat. Surprised, but not injured at all -- our door just doesn't get hot enough to burn somebody. Moreover, if I'm baking, or roasting (or braising, etc.) while working at the range, I'm not especially aware of heat coming through the door at all. And the oven door handle stays just fine -- don't need a potholder to open the door at all. Our two younger kids had just turned 9 when we bought the range and I'd had similar questions, and had them resolved before we bought place our order. They've never had problems getting getting burnt, and neither has our small dog. Of course other kids may be younger, and things happen, but I don't see a danger from the door itself. With our range, a little kid could fall against the glass door, or poke it with a finger while looking at cookies, and not be injured at all. Startled, perhaps, but not injured. The far more significant risk seems to me to be common to any range at all: little kids need to know that a stove is not a toy, but something to be careful about. They need to know that they oughtn't to go crashing into it or leap up and grab things. They need to know that whether you buy a BS, or CC, or NXR, or GE, or a 20 year-old whirlpool from a garage sale. An open flame is an open flame; a hot coil is a hot coil; and a pot full of boiling water can scald anybody.

Way to go, Sailorgirl!! You are anticipating the next play in your reconstruction job. I agree that you don't need to work yourself into a corner that you cannot get out of, so keeping your options open is a wise way to go. And Steph, the way you say it is so true. That is why I think a real good walkin closet is fantastic to have. Sailorgirl, when you do the cupboard doors, think about getting them as open louvers. That would give some ventilation. Of course, you could enclose that portion of your storage with CEDAR BOARDS, and make yourself a real CEDAR CLOSET up there. Then, of course, solid wood doors and not open louvered ones. Yes, Steph, they have those storage areas a lot in very old homes. I'm thinking it might have been common in stone houses? In Ireland, for instance, the space behind the hearth and chimney was turned into a lofted space where the children slept. In the case of my DH's mother, they had TWO hearths, and the girls slept up a ladder behind one, and the boys slept up a ladder behind the other one. The parents slept in the room behind the chimney on the ground floor. So I can see that space was useful for storage if the kids were not sleeping there. Incidentally, they also had a way to fold away the bed in a special cabinet so the room was used during the day for sewing or other uses. Hmmmm, it makes me realize that the "Murphy" bed may well have been an IRISH invention? :) In small rooms, especially in small GUEST rooms, a Murphy type bed is a great invention. Some are made to raise on their sides, some on their ends. Where ceilings are low, the side rise would be the best, IMHO.

Yet another overwintering question

If your plants have been severely cut back, I'd consider keeping them semidormant near a window, watering only when the soil has mostly dried out, and keeping them sprayed with horticultural soap/lightweight horticultural oil on a regular basis to keep mites and whiteflies at bay. The cool basement/sunporch would be ideal for overwintering dormant Brugmansias except such conditions are hard for most of us to come by. My routine (probably to be undertaken next weekend) is to strip all the leaves off my large plants and lug the pots down into a dark corner of the basement to overwinter at about 65 degrees, withholding water and continuing to strip off any new leaves/blooms until the plant goes dormant. Then they get infrequent waterings with cool/cold water (just enough to keep stems from shriveling) until it's time to set them out again in spring. This generally works well and there are few if any casualties (previous attempts to overwinter them in the unheated garage or crawl space where it got down near freezing failed - just too cold). I don't bother trying to grow any but the smallest plants under lights - they're bug magnets and large plants are too difficult to get adequate spray coverage on.

They take quite a while that first year. Just be patient! (And keep the weeds out!)

Today, 3 more PP (out of 10) are up! Just one hold out. Plant asparagus & reap patience.

oh yes those lazy gus,,, maybe it knows something about your upcoming weather you don't......not sure if you have been having much rain, but i would give it a good drink of water, just might be the trigger it is waiting for. did you give it a really good soaking when you planted it? the water drives out air pockets, and stimulates the dormant roots.

My new ones took forever to come up. I'd almost given up on them, but now they are going like gangbusters. Don't give up! Be sure to water them often.

REALLY dumb question. I put the bare root asparagus down and since I figured they won't we able to be harvested until next year, I put canteloupe plants in the same area. Think I will have any problems?

I actually soaked them overnight as I didn't get them in the ground the day I planned to, but had to finish digging the area the next day. So they were soaked well and I've kept them watered - when it hasn't been raining! The only thing is, I didn't put them in a trench and backfill as they grew (obviously, since they're not growing yet!) I planted them according to the Ohio State instructions - dug a wide trench, spread out the roots for each crown, then just filled the whole thing in in one go.

I was wondering the same thing edible - can I plant something else there for now as I'm waiting for the asparagus to grow? I don't want to do anything that will hurt or set them back tho.
