do I need to cull?(pics)

My kids planted the seeds and it looks like they put more than a couple in each cell. The fist pic is broccoli in the middle row and the second pic is lettuce. Do I need to pull any up yet, wait, or leave it alone till I transplant? Thank you.

If it were me, I would wait for them to establish more, then thin.. Some of the seedlings could die off.. If you thin now and the ones you left die off, you are left with no plants.. If you wait and make sure you have strong seedlings in each cell, then you are guaranteed a nice plant..

Yep, I would thin those out, have a nice baby lettuce salad, and then let them grow up a bit, and thin them again and have another nice salad. If you have other places to plant, you can transplant some of those as well. I start mine thick like that in a tray, then transplant some to grow to full size, and also cut baby greens from the tray. Hello, I have gotten a lot of help on my other thread regarding my sister's floors. Now, my husband tells me that he thinks her floors are too busy. I have attached pics of a floor he really likes. It is 5 inch red oak quarter sawn. We would get 3 1/4" width. Does anyone know what color stain we need to consider to get the look? Do you think we can get the same color using white oak instead of red oak? Also, do you think part of the appeal is that its quarter sawn or that a similar color on regular oak would give the same effect (I realize the last question is very subjective). thanks for any help--I am driving everyone crazy--including myself ! Vladimir, I water the same way from the top and didn't have problems with damp off from any of the other plants (they were all planted together from when I started them until recently). I used a granular slow release fert that I thought had caused burns when watering caused the granules to come into direct contact with the stems. Our temps have been in the mid nineties with the feel at 100. I have been watering very lightly every day unless the soil is still wet. Steve, the ring is genius! I may try that when it is time to replant, and on my new key lime seedlings. Kvetchlambkin, thanks for the words of encouragement - they started off growing fast, then have proceeded to slow way down, so I wasn't sure. I am using a mix of top soil that has small pine bark (1/8-1/2"), perlite, vermiculite, a little peat, and a little potting soil - plants seem to like it and it drains fairly well. I know this is probably not ideal, but I'm having a hard time finding pine bark fines in my area without having to order some and spend an arm and a leg. I think I will try ordering ProMix in the future. I am a worrying about where they will all go this winter, as I only have 2 southern facing windows that receive sun and those are reserved for my key lime and eureka trees. I guess grow lights will be on the purchase list. Again, thank you all for your time and great advice! I know citrus trees can be difficult to grow successfully (I can't keep dill alive!), but the experience has been nothing short of rewarding :) -Kelley 8a

It all depends on your budget. If you have a healthy budget then I'd completely gut the kitchen and start from scratch.

I can see them, not sure what's up that Dave can't. I see many potential problems there. Yes, it would be good to cull some. I might let 2 or 3 coexist in a size that small just to see which shaped up as healthiest, but not 5+. Those are very leggy, which tells me they aren't getting enough light with enough intensity. Those can turn into plants with weak stems that snap easily, which is undesirable. So when culling I would actually keep the shorter ones and try to give them better light. And the cells look waterlogged, which means that damping off could start soon and you will lose seedlings. Think of keeping the soil moist, like a good brownie, rather than soggy like brownie batter. Cheers!

Edit: meant to say I would let 2-3 coexist for a little while, like maybe a week.

You could try moving some of the culls very carefully with a spoon to an open cell. I had good results using this method with lettuce this year. I just moved them and gently pushed them into the dirt with a finger afterwards.

Not like you'll lose anything by trying, anyway.

I prefer to pinch them off instead of pulling, which can damage the roots of the plants you want to keep.

I agree with keeping the smaller ones and giving them more light.

Broccoli doesn't like competition so that I would thin now-by pinching off at soil level the taller of the plants.

Lettuce I would wait.

thanks for the responses! I have culled some of the taller ones and put them outside during the day. Hopefully I'll get some good results.

I leave lettuce in clumps and pull apart when I plant out. Although this damages some roots and holds some plants back this is an advantage to me since I don't want them all ready at once.
