I bought quarter sawn red oak cabinets for my previous kitchen and although the doors were quartersawn, the interior faces of the cabinets were regular red oak veneer. That's the way they were manufactured. Since the doors were full overlay, the parts of the cabinets that were not quartersawn were never really visible and I had "furniture" sides so those were also quartersawn. However, red oak and white oak are different species, with the white oak tending more towards browner tones. If I were you I would buy a sample door and see how the color match goes with your current boxes. Or you can buy an unfinished door and see if you can play with stain to match the color. You might be able to find a stain close to your current cabinets in tone that will be good with the honey oak. .

What kind of plant do they get the jaco-beans from? No one has ever been able to say. ;) Red oak has a stronger color-presence to overcome that it would appear from looking at the unfinished wood. Black walnut stain, which has some greenish cast in it, may be more useful as the first coat to deal with the excess of warmth. Casey

If you don't specify what you get will be "run of the tree" as it were, a mixture of plain sawn, rift, and quarter depending on which part of the tree it came from and the angle of the cut relative to the growth rings. There are ways the sawyer can optimize yield of rift/quartersawn, but it's very wasteful, hence expensive. The other approach is to sort the boards after they are cut. There will be relatively few quartersawn, again resulting in a higher price. Heres a good diagram. Unfortunately your installer wasn't paying any attention to grain, a very, very common problem in almost everything made of wood (and the reason that most factory cabinets and furniture are drenched in nearly opaque stain). He should either have intermixed the boards with different patterns (the typical solution) or sorted them using the QS wood someplace special or reselling it at a substantial markup.

I'm trying to understand this advice to drywall over brick. I imagine it happens that someone buys a home because they love a lot of things about it but they hate the brick. But I don't hear this from the home owner. She seems to be happy with it. And I don't really see in any way that brick fights with wood. Brick and wood in home design have always been a happy choice for a lot of people. People who like a more casual style, who like a country style. Who like natural materials. Yes, it is not currently the style of the day. It's not sleek and modern and white and gray. But, whether you are another home owner or a professional, when asked for advice on the forums, I think we all might remember to pay attention to what the homeowner is asking for and what they are not asking for. I think it would be unfortunate to try to make everyone's home a cookie cutter version of everyone else's home. And if someone is happy with certain elements of their home and they get all this advice about how it just doesn't work and it should be replaced, that can be deflating. And I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. I realize professionals might think they are being asked to give their best advice, sure, but at the same time, sometimes it might be just a difference in taste and style. Sometimes people feel they have a blank slate and want all the advice and ideas they can get. It's just my observation from reading multiple threads on Houzz, that sometimes the OP expresses what they are looking for and it's not always noticed.
