I Spy: Oars and Paddles
Functional Finds Become Instant Art for Wall, Corner or Door
Do you ever notice an object, pattern, or specific piece of furniture around Houzz and find yourself noticing it again and again? Awhile back I started noticing oars and paddles leaning in corners or mounted on the walls. It's a great way to use a found object and turn it into a sculptural item in your home. What are some items you've been noticing around Houzz lately? Do you keep any ideabooks that keep track of them? Please let us know in the comments section.
The paddles and board add character to this airy tropical room.
Houzz user triciarose helped me find several of these oars, and she uses them herself, as well as other artful found objects, on her walls. Bravo Triciarose! See more of this creative cabin on the water
Oars are also kind of hard to store, so why not display them? This kayak paddle adds some color close to the ceiling and is easy to access when she wants to go out on the water.
This oar draws the eye up above the windows and makes the ceiling seem higher.
The wood of this old oar ties into the rough hewn beams on the ceiling. It's also a nice vertical element in the horizontal planks.
Someone clever transformed this oar into a towel bar.
Who needs a valance when there are wooden paddles around?
This oar adds to the curb appeal of this charming cottage.
I'll admit, not sure if this is a paddle, a fan, or a weapon, but it's close enough, and it is a strong component of the clever composition of textures and colors in this room.
Painted oars add to the nautical style of this open living space.
Grouping found objects together can be a successful strategy. This oar looks right at home next to the vintage shutter.
