Culling hostas, and an issue on ethics!
Comments (16)would it be considered unethical to give it away to someone who is happy to "just get a free hosta"? ===>>> so to sum it up.. you feel guilty giving gifts????? what does ethics have to do with gifting friends???? the recipient has two options.. which i have personally exercised over the years ... be thrilled as heck.. and treasure the gift.. its value being the friendship.. rather than the value ... [and i think that is the key to your dilemma ... its the value of the friend.. not the gift itself ...] versus... smiling.. thanking them.. and going home and throwing it in the compost pile .. because it is the invasive weed we know it is.. lol ... years later saying.. oh that didnt come up the next spring [this is an ethics issue.. lol] ... as far as i am concerned.. there is no ethics in giving a gift ... [as compared to not gifting treasured friend] its up to them to value it appropriately and that is the friendship.. not the gift itself .. OK.. enough belly button gazing this early in the morning ... ken...See MoreFinished Culling Seedlings
Comments (6)I think the wait for a great seedlings is worth it. Yours have done really well with VL so I'm sure any new ones in the works will be just a wonderful. I will be getting VL but not till next spring along with MOONLIGHT SAIL. Too late this year to wait for shipments and get them in the ground this year. Julia...See MoreWhen to cull?
Comments (4)The only thing is, if I don't direct sow, I don't think I can keep them alive in this heat. Somehow, it seems that seedlings are more likely to survive the heat if they are born in the heat, instead of having to survive the trauma of being transplanted. I sure wish I had a garden that was about an acre in size. Squash and melons take so much room and I really love them. One day soon, I'll be moving, and then I'll have the joy of starting a new, giant garden, getting all that real dirt whipped into shape. I'm actually really glad I'm not in OK, sharing you're miserable weather this year, though. We've had our share of heat, but it's just normal for us, and hasn't been combined with hail, wind, freezes and other bad stuff. Y'all have had a worse than normal year, it seems. Makes me wonder I'd I should start looking in the Ozarks or somewhere a little milder? Nah, I'd miss all the excitement!...See MoreCulling blossoms?
Comments (1)You can dig the ones in the ground. And meanwhile you can cover them at night when there's a chance of frost. Yes, culling the blooms and any new pods they set will help. The question is, will it help enough to make it worthwhile? That I don't know....See MoreKelley_GA8a
