Whiskey barrel combo pic

I didn't plant it with the usual geranium/spike/dusty miller. Used Persian Sheild (new to me this year), coleus. sweet potato vine and million bells. There is also some silver spike, but the potato took over it and the millon bells. It still was a refreshing change.

I like your container! The Persian Shield is beautiful. I saw it last year, but was unable to buy any due to a move. I obviously haven't been to the right place this year, or missed it. Great job on your combo.

indeed, very nice arrangement! How much sun is the barrel getting? I just picked up a barrel and was thinking about what to put in it next year. I have persian shield way up on my list of plants to try next year as well as sweet potato vines so your arrangement is inspiring to me.

I used a 5 gallon bucket per plant. I had to water 2 times a day when the temperatures were over 100 degs. Above 90 degrees I water 1-----2 times per day depending on wind.. Between 80-90 degrees at least 4 times a week below 80 degrees didn't happen I have 55 gallon drums halved. I'll do 4 plants each with drums placed on a 3ft. by 2ft grid.Last year I had 21 peppers and 2 egg plants. They behave very similar to each other and were extremely productive.I also started the plants under lights indoors and was picking peppers as I set the plants out. hears a few links and pictures you might get ideas from. 4ft by 4ft by 2ft growing box CFL lighting 12 bulbs 13 watt each as the plants get bigger. Click on either pic to open up display in photobucket use arrow keys on key board the link provided below contains the best picture of my 5 gallon peppers. I was unable to find eggplant pics and thus are not visible but they do a little better than the peppers plants. Click on the link-picture to get more ideas These plants are on the rooftop garden and get moved around to get more or less light depending on the temperature. YOU SHOULD DO REAL WELL ALLOWING AROUND 4 TO 5 GALLONS SOIL PER PLANT. Hi Al, OK, I am doing it that way already but just didn't describe it the same way..lol. I had to look up apex. [g], but the definition clarified things for me. I think I understand now that when you say cross, you mean gathering the tops of the bamboo poles together and tying them where they cross. While the three 'legs' of the bamboo tripod are spread out at triangle points in the container, right? I thought you might have meant tying them together at the wider point down at the base, just above the top of the container. Well, anyway, I am pretty sure I have the picture. I will let you know how it goes and when it is done I will send a photo. Thanks :-)

How about using the pickets you can get in a roll to surround the liner? Don't forget to poke plenty of holes in the bottom so your planting has drainage. Also, don't forget to post pics of your finished project!

Hi! Glad you all enjoyed Vera's pretty face, and yes, her stems were quite short. I was just so glad she finally decided to bloom after buying her last November!! Goes to show, they all have their own time table and when they want to rest, they want to rest!! The rest of the bulbs are doing great in the barrel, with about 6 hours full sun and lots of food! Luckily, the chipmunks have left them alone so far. I am going to write their names on their leaves because the labels will be just to tempting for the critters!! These were the bulbs that refused to put out leaves, Temptation was another that just refused to grow any leaves, all are doing well basking in the sun! Thanks for looking, Donna

The textures are super and the colors pop beautifully. Nice job. That's just the kind of thing I want to put out on the grass strip by the sidewalk, to give the neighbors something to enjoy.

what is in the back? I see the persian shield, potato vine and coleus. What is the plant with the red/purple veins and green leaves? It really ties everything else together nicely.

I think you need to provide us (me) with a planting recipe so we (I) can make that next year ;-)

I love the combo of coleus and sweet potato vine. I have that in one of my containers this year, and it's the first year I've planted either. I love it so much, I'm always going to have this combination!

Thanks for all the nice compliments on my barrel. (I was away this week end, sorry it took so long to reply). Username 5, there are 2 persian shield, 2 or 3 potato vine, 1 dark veined green coleus and 1 maroonish green trimmed coleus (started that one from seed). I had 3 white millionbells and have 2 silvery spike things, but they were quickly over-taken. The barrel gets direct sun for a hour or two mid morning and filtered sun the rest of the day. I thought maybe it would be too much for the coleus but everything seems happy.
