Metal containers without drain holes

So! My mom brought over these adorable containers.

They are metal, and without any drain holes. I am afraid that if I plant directly in them, they will rust, as well as collect way too much water.

Where would I get plastic liners for these? The liners wouldn't drain either though, so how do I solve this problem of no draining? I just don't get it. How do you plant in things with no drainage holes without having plants rot?

Could I leave these adorable pots outside, or would they just rust? Maybe they are for indoors. Not a clue.

I would drill holes, spray the inside with a rust-proof paint, and then set pots with drainage
holes in the planter. If you want to seal the exterior surfaces, too, that would increase the
longevity.

A) If the compost is 'finished', the particles are very small and will be very water retentive - IMO, not well-suited physically for use in container soils in any appreciable volume. B) If the compost is NOT finished, it contains particles highly variable in size that break down very quickly into increasingly smaller particles. As unfinished compost breaks down, it does add some nutrients to the soil, but it also promotes the immobilization of N. When it breaks down to the 'finished' stage .... well, see A) above. Compost actually adds very little in the way of nutrients. What it does add can easily be supplied, either macro or micronutrients, by other either organic or chemical supplements. It increases water retention as it fills valuable soil pores and decreases aeration. The question I would beg of myself is: Why choose to use it, knowing there are other organic alternatives with better structural stability and that what it adds nutritionally can be replaced very simply with 1 or 2 fertilizer additives that will be required regardless of whether compost is used or not. Hi cookie, Yes, you should put drain holes in the bottom of the trays; the soil needs good drainage to allow oxygen to reach the roots. The soil needs to be damp but not wet. Don't know what kind of plastic trays you have, but some plastics will crack or break if you try to drill holes through it. I usually burn the holes through using an old soldering iron, but of course anything hot enough would work as wall. As for what to cover the trays with, keep in mind that the only purpose of covering the trays is to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly. If you're home all the time and can make sure the soil stays slightly damp, you really don't need to cover the trays at all. In fact, in my opinion, it's better if you can get by without covers. If you work all day and can't watch the plants close enough, then you might be better off covering the trays with something that would let the light in (glass, clear plastic, or even Saran or Handi Wrap). I will let someone who does this answer you on how to do it. I personally do not plant anything in a pot without drainage except bogs plants and aquatics and so forth. What I do do from time to time, is plant in a pot with drainage (and I prefer unglazed clay) and set that pot down inside the decorative pot, on some gravels, small bricks etc. depending on the size of the pots, to make sure the bottom of the pot will not be in any collected water. This is usually not even going to come up due to the way I water. I remove the planted clay pot from the cache and water it in the sink and allow it to sit for some time to completely drain. Then I put it back in the cache pot. I don't plant in a pot without drainage because all that water in the bottom is going to sour at some point. And even with the buffer of foam or whatever, that can all become filled with water and that spells trouble or death, sooner or later, unless you are *very very* careful. I just won't take that chance with any plant I care about. Your mileage may vary. Robert.

She got them from Meijer, but I think on clearance, so I'm not sure if they'd have liners there as well. Hmm... Rust proof paint sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the tips! Still wondering where I can get the liners though, thanks!

Warning, no matter what you do - sooner or later, (assuming you're planting something in them or leaving them outside) they will rust.

I have my prickly pear cactus sitting in a galvanized tub. They've been there for several years now, and the bottom hasn't rusted out yet. I lined it with a regular black trash bag and poked holes in both the plastic and bottom. (Then I just filled it with cactus mix.)

Also, watch out for mosquitoes. Those suckers don't need much water to grow a new batch of suckers. You might consider getting some of those biodegradable thingies (sorry, I don't know their names) that people place in their garden ponds to keep mosquitoes down to one slap per minute rate. (We use them in our earthbox and in our now-rusting red wagon, but the mosquitoes are multiplying anyway. Then again, nothing but container garden, so it's hard to figure out where they're finding standing water.)Water will collect somewhere on the bottom-with or without drainage holes and with or without liners.

And speaking of ponds...ever consider making one into a water plant water-feature? Just an idea that you'll have to google, but it looks big enough for a little one.

My husband secured a pipe inside the plant's drainage hole far enough so the water would drain out and sealed it so that water could only go out the hole...small rocks at bottom of the plant and covered the opening in such a way to let the water out, but keep the soil in, not too big of a pipe or too long.

Drilled hole in the container that did not have a hole. Lined the holes up and the same size as the pipe.

Stuck the plant in the container so that the pipe would stick out the bottom and the water would go straight out to the ground. If the pipe is short enough, you don't even see it.
