Need drainage advice

My window boxes this year are looking sad. I have long plastic rectangular liners inside, and I just don't think I have the drainage I need. They are always soggy compared to my terra cotta pots which drain so nicely. I bought deeper ones for next year (part of the problem is that they were just too shallow) and I would like to drill extra drainage holes in the bottom.

How big should the drainage holes be? How many would you recommend?

I was then planning on lining the bottom with needlepoint plastic canvas (read about it on here--suggested by Al--thank you!)

Should I also add a layer of rocks on top of the screen to help with air circulation? Thought it also might help cut down on the amount of dirt I'll need. Or do you all prefer crushed cans?

Lastly, has anyone tried the "better than rocks" product used for drainage? Wow, it is pricey...just wanted to hear your thoughts.

Thanks so much!
