Incorportae Blue Spruce in to Landscape
Comments (3)"Fat Albert" wouldn't be too bad a choice; keeping in mind that it can ultimately have a 7-10' footprint, too. Planting out to compensate for the fence is a good idea. Consider the ninebark "Dart's Gold" for additional fence shrubs. Extremely no care. Very prunable (but why??), but usually top out around 8'. I've had two of them - facing west - for maybe six years now. They're getting the characteristic, interesting, shreddy looking bark and have lovely long arching branches now covered with flowering buds. I love the yellow/chartreuse leaf color in the spring and summer....See MoreHow far should Sassafras and Blue Spruce be from the road?
Comments (11)I knew the problem with that picture was it made the area look too good. I took that picture precisely because it was pretty, but other parts of the yard look more bare, including the part in front of the house. That's a mix of maple and (hidden behind the maples in this shot) Eastern Red Cedar that self-seeded along a fence line. When I was little there was a row of pine (Austrian? Japanese Black?) in front of them. Quite a few of the trees in the yard are getting long in the tooth...we lost a bunch of big limbs this year, and a few trees a couple years ago...I know another batch are going to go in a year or two. My thought was we'd plant a couple rows of trees to fill in the gap in front of the house, then thought of extending it beyond the house to provide "understudies" for those trees. My reason for not planting the trees farther back was because I wanted to allow some space away from what's left of that row, and to continue a line of trees the neighbors (on the other side) started on their property. Neither row is a directly beneath the power line, but the front row I was thinking of is close. The side I'm planting trees along is about 417 feet long. Comments (2)If you're somewhere on the east coast, move the tree and yourself to Colorado: a location about 6000 ft should suffice but they really prefer to be higher. Otherwise, sue your landscaper for planting it? Sorry to be facetious, but look around where you live. If you don't see a lot of healthy looking mature blue spruces, there's no reason yours is going to be an exception. This kind of dieback is absolutely typical. At the very least it looks like it might be planted too low....See MoreWhich blue spruce- baby blue or baby blue eyes?
Comments (7)Ive had 2 baby blue eyes and 10 or so baby blue in the ground about 4 years(one year the local nursery got waaaaaaaay tooo many baby blue(blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool blue is cool, and in case you forget blue is cool!)), pulled out the worst looking/greenest ones and sold them for cheap). Baby blue eyes is noticeably denser, at least in these smaller specimens. Baby blue is seed grown and thus there will be some variation bw specimens (Ive observed this is color with some noticeably more green or blue than others). According to the grower in Ontario, Canada, baby blue is a “slightly narrower” version of a basic P. Pungens. Only have one close pic of baby blue eyes and none of baby blue. If it was me, Id get one or two of each. If I had to pic just one, I would pick the baby blue eyes. It seems like one of the older tried and true varieties that has been largely been overlooked in more recent years. The baby blue eyes specimen I planted in the front yard, which is largely shade, has been doing quite well. In time though, who knows as I also like the idea that baby blue will probably be narrower in the long term....See Moredinosaur1
