Container Size? Small Wisteria - Please Help

Hi, I have a small wisteria plant that I would like to place in a container. It is currently in a small pot from the nursery. I will never plant the wisteria in the ground because it is too invasive. I'm new to planting in container's, and I am unsure of what size container to use. Do I start off with a small pot, and then move it to a bigger pot. Or, will this upset the plant if it is moved once it becomes settled in the pot it's in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it need to be moved - did you inspect the roots and find it to be root-bound - soil inappropriate? How large is the container it's in now?

It came in a pint size pot - I didn't look at the root's, what exactly should I be looking for. Root-bound? Is that when the roots are coming out from the bottom of the pot, and are tightly woven. If so, there not. I haven't placed it in another container yet because I was unsure what size to use. I appreciate your help, thank you.

The source of my beliefs is research, practical experience, and observation. The application is borrowed from the science of geology, but physical laws of adhesion, cohesion, and gravity combine in container soils to govern its variable effect. The primary influence is the particulate size of container soils. You can prove its (PWT) existence in myriad ways. Hold a saturated sponge with its largest (in area) surface horizontal until it stops draining. Turn the sponge so it's smallest surface is horizontal, and more perched water will drain as the height of the PWT equalizes in a lesser volume of sponge. Grasping the sponge by a corner after it has again stopped draining, so one corner is down, further reduces the volume of sponge occupied by perched water and even more water will drain. Finally, with a corner down and no draining occurring, touch the corner with a toothpick held vertically (a wick) and even more water will drain. Or: Hold a toothpick to the drain hole of a container of saturated soil that has just stopped draining & watch its wicking effect drain more water that had obviously perched in the container. The long probe idea that you mentioned is what I have the best luck with in these situations. The ones you buy are forked on the end and are sometimes called 'dandelion fork', but you might be able to use something else without having to purchase one. I lucked up and found one at a yard sale but if I ever lose this one I wouldn't hesitate to buy another it really helps when weeding out those things with the long tap root. Just push in right next to the weed and pop it right out. Works great!

Beware that the nursery industry lies... Uhhh, gee thanks. :( But, "lies", no. That is an unfair statement. Dry gallons and liquid gallons aren't the same amount. 1 gallon, dry = 1.1636 gallons, liquid So what you are seeing in the nursery industry is a liquid gallon label since that is the U.S. Customary usage but which actually hold the equivalent dry gallon measurement of a dry material like potting soil. A 5 gallon nursery pot will hold 5 gallons of water (if you plug up the drain holes) it just won't hold 5 gallons of potting soil. A 5 gallon paint bucket (liquid) = 4.3 dry gallons. I was just looking at the eiffel tower chairs on overstock.. I think they have an interesting modern look with a small footprint. My worry though would be how they'd stand up to daily use. As for artwork.. there are so many options but kids love animals. I'd look for some interesting artwork that your daughter will like looking at for hours a day that also incorporate animals.. I know many dislike them but I love the William Beard dancing bear prints. :) Good luck to your daughter!

So your plant is very tiny - yes? If it is not root-bound (you were right about the description of root-bound) and you want to plant it in a larger container, I would either use a soil that is amended to drain very quickly, or place the current pot & all in a container filled with soil that is as large as you want. When you water, water your plant thoroughly and keep the soil in the larger container damp.

B - Yes, wisteria is often grown in very small containers as a bonsai specimen where it flowers & grows with good vitality. ;o)

Thanks for your help Al (by the way that's my husband's name) I think it might be interesting to learn about creating a bonsai with the wisteria. I have a beautiful bouganvillia although it is not bonsai size, the way I prune it looks like a bonsai. Thanks again.
