Winter-proof, shade-proof, evergreen shrubs

We're in a brownstone co-op in Brooklyn and have 3 36" pots in front, all in partly/mostly shady. The left and right are filled with colossal hostas that seem to be doing phenomenally -- even better than their nearby siblings in the ground! (I'll try to post photos). The middle one awaits planting, and I was thinking of an evergreen shrub that would winter over and provide a vertical accent.

Anyone have experience with or thoughts about rhododendrons or pieris Japonica in pots? Other ideas?

What about hydrangeas (though of course wouldn't be evergreen) -- any particular types that would work well here?

If there's room left over (at least initially), it'd be nice to mix in some annuals below. Any flowers that would look nice and tolerate shade and acid soil (if I use rhodos or pieris)? Would vinca or lobelia work, and, if so, would they look weird? Other ideas?
