Pots with saucers

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, I usually hang out on That Home Site.

I have a good number of indoor plants, and I'm finding it increasingly hard to find pots with saucers. I actually like to water my plants by pouring water into the saucer and letting the plant suck it up as it needs it. I keep myself from overwatering this way. In any case, even if I poured water into the soil, I'd need a saucer to catch the overflow.

I'm in the process of repotting several of my plants and wanted new pots. A few months ago, I was only able to find a few pots with matching saucers. This weekend, I only found a few odds-and-ends type saucers piled in one corner with all of the other pots being saucerless.

I was at Garden Ridge Pottery - which literally has hundreds of pots, plus I looked at a local garden center and HD & Lowes.

Are saucers a thing of the past? If so, how do people deal with indoor plants?

I like to use saucers, plates, etc. from garage sales and thrift shops

Saucers are definitely not a thing of the past because I try to find matching saucers for all of my pots, which reminds me I need to run to Lowe's after while :-). Really I do, but anyway of course you want saucers you don't want to ruin your floors. Furthermore who wants to have to keep mopping up water? Those who don't do them, ~holds up fist~ more power to them; as for me I think saucers are the finishing touch to plants in containers. ~Snaps fingers and rolls neck~ You do your saucers girl! You are a girl right? LOL

I have always experienced inferior growth from Clay Pots - in respect to Hippeastrums, nota bene. I use Balcony Boxes from Plastic, and terracotta-colored and black Plastic Pots and -Containers respectively. During the last 3 years, I even resorted to the unquestionably! cheapest Containers, which are those black Mortar-Buckets from the Bau-Markt= "DIY"="Do-It-Yourself"-Big-Box-Stores. These Containers typically have a "rubber smell" on them. Their ACTUAL disadvantage in respect to "cultivation" is the absence of holes, which I drill into the bottom. The more holes, the better. BTW, you can put up to 5 pots into another, turn the whole pack upside down, and drill the holes in one sweep. The other disadvantage, also IMPORTANTLY, is that these containers will seriously heat up if and when sunlight gains access from the sides (a consideration which applies indoors too, if behind glass or indoors on a windowsill facing WEST particularly on a high floor). I avoid possible "baking of the roots" by sheets of Aluminium foil sticking all over the critical side of the pot. It is true, that the according "saucers" cost me a multiple of a cheap container. My biggest containers are 20 Liters, two of them are in use, one of them on my balcony, harboring my Cluster of "PapDonAmb2" with 6 bulbs of bloomable size in it. The other, on the windowsill, with the seedlings "PapDonAmb2" x "PapDon1" as a cluster, since I had been to lazy, to EVER separate them. What I like to repeat is, that it makes a difference to an Amaryllis bulb, whether one Big bulb has 3 liters of "dirt" "available" OR six bulbs "sharing" 6 x 3 Liters = 18 Liters in a big Container. However, this only applies to groups of bulbs which are already growing together. If you plant 6 bulbs from the Store, which are bare rooted, the remainders largely dried, up then you are better off when you plant these individually in 3 Liter Pots, and control METICULOUSLY against overwatering before the formation of leaves which indicates higher water consumption. they DO like to be root bound.. not nearly as much as the bird of Paradise though. get a pot not much more than 1 or 2" bigger than what you have. A good sturdy plastic "nursery" pot is the best. the big black ones, with big drainage holes. you know, the ones that your plants come in when you buy them from the nursery. use a good potting mix. Buy a big plastic clear drainage pan that fits underneath it with room to spare. NOW, go out and find your glazed pot. with no drainage holes, and no tray. It will have to be big enough that the plastic tray and pot will fit inside comfortably. Now, more than likely the decorative pot will be taller than the plastic one. so, find something sturdy to place in the bottom of the decorative pot to raise up the plant. you can use big chunks of styrofoam, wood, other pots upside down.. what ever. Put the plastic tray and then the potted plant on top of that. It the decorative pot is wider, You can brace the plant's plastic planter with styrofoam, old t'shirt.. lol isn't someone trying to get rid of a bunch? wadded up newpaper works very well, on top of that newspaper spread out some spanish moss to beautify the whole top! Just like the pros. they BEST thing for you AND the plant AND the decorative pot is to NOT plant them directly in to the decorative pot.

What do the Judges look for: (a) Flowers - Freshness. A fresh flower is one that has not been damaged, and on which the stigma has not wilted or died. On some cultivars the colour of the corolla may fade over its life cycle, providing the flower is stil fresh this will not be considered a cultural fault. Prematurely opened buds detract from perfection and are obvious in that they are normally immature and smaller than other flowers on the plant and therefore unacceptable. Always remove dead or dying flowers; it is better to present a plant with 20 fresh flowers than one with 50, half of which are dying or dead. (b) Leaves. Remove any heavily marked or dying leaves. Clean all the leaves individually before showing, removing water marks etc. (c) Soil. Before entering your plant into a show, remove a quarter to half inch of soil, replace this with fresh soil. (d) Pots and Saucers. Make sure that your pot and suacer are very clean. This can make all the difference where 'points' are concerned. The picture below is of Fuchsia Fulgens Varigata, it was on the show bench, amongst other plants that were much larger. Yeah, I'm a girl. :)

Well, I'll have to start searching for them at garage sales & such, but as far as lowes, hd, garden centers and garden ridge pottery in Houston, they pretty much don't exist.

If you have a store you find them at currently, please let me know and I'll go look.

I've pretty much been relegated to buying those clear plastic saucers for my smaller (and some larger) containers. I've found them at places ranging from my local supermarket (in their tiny plant sections) to Home Depot. The ones I've found come in sizes ranging up to where I can put it under a 16" or wider pot. I bottom water several things (like a cyclamen, etc). Sometimes I can find containers that have the saucer built-in and it can actually twist off if need be. I've also used some containers that were labeled as self-watering (assuming you use the wick) and they actually have an open "resevoir" area at the bottom (with a hole on the side) that acts as a saucer for excess water, although the actual soil sits on some sort of gridded insert placed above the resevoir.

I'm looking for pretty ceramic pots with matching saucers. I prefer the saucer to be a separate piece but will settle for an attached one. I have seen the clear plastic ones but I really want the saucer to be ceramic and match the pot.

I just wonder why all the stores I shop at that USED to sell saucers don't anymore. I'll keep looking though!

If you don't want things too matchy, aluminum pie plates look nice. NOT the tin foil ones, the ones you find in the kitchen section in your local thrift shop. If you're going with straight up terra cotta pots, just try repurposing something. Old china plates that have the right shape can look good too.
