i am the same way you are. i love those pots w/o saucers (and just why don't they make matching saucers?! more $$ they could make) but hate that plastic thing lol. i have found some nice plastic saucers that have wrought iron framework and wheels under them, that helps w/ the plastic look. you can also use nice cork saucers under the pot if it's not sitting on carpet or wood. i have a few of these rubber fake wrought iron plant coasters for the lanai which is pavers. those are nice for outdoors, i got them at Lowe's where the door matts are.

i have a few large indoor pots, 20" diameter and up, that i do not have drainage holes in. i plugged them up (silicone fishtank sealent) since at that size they are too difficult to move for watering. they are on tile and bamboo plank w/ either the scroll wheeled coaster or cork (tile only).

as for pots w/ matching saucers i did see nice ones at Joann's of all places. plus you can use their weekly 40% off coupon. check at Michaels too. maybe a non-chain local garden center? hope you find the right thing! i tend to buy pots when i see them whether or not i need them right away, just in case i need it plus then if i see a plant i want i don't need to wait to find a pot lol. ~ liz

I need to repot my large Bird of Paradise I'm thinking. The plastic pot is cracked on one side almost top to bottom.
They do like to be pot-bound and I see several in nurseries where the plastic pot is miss-shapen or cracked.
Hopefully someone with some knowledge of BOP will advise me.
Generally I plant my plants in plastic pots with drainage holes....all sizes and plop them in ceramic pots w/o drainage holes. Then I haul it out of the ceramic pot and into a 5-gallon pail to water and drain (in the case of my Bird).

I use the clear plastic saucers (found at Walmart,Lowes,Etc.) They come in all sizes.

I buy large platters at goodwill stores, and put them under my pots. Also, trays from broken microwaves work. ;)

they DO like to be root bound.. not nearly as much as the bird of Paradise though. get a pot not much more than 1 or 2" bigger than what you have. A good sturdy plastic "nursery" pot is the best. the big black ones, with big drainage holes. you know, the ones that your plants come in when you buy them from the nursery. use a good potting mix. Buy a big plastic clear drainage pan that fits underneath it with room to spare.

NOW, go out and find your glazed pot. with no drainage holes, and no tray. It will have to be big enough that the plastic tray and pot will fit inside comfortably. Now, more than likely the decorative pot will be taller than the plastic one. so, find something sturdy to place in the bottom of the decorative pot to raise up the plant.

you can use big chunks of styrofoam, wood, other pots upside down.. what ever. Put the plastic tray and then the potted plant on top of that. It the decorative pot is wider, You can brace the plant's plastic planter with styrofoam, old t'shirt.. lol isn't someone trying to get rid of a bunch? wadded up newpaper works very well, on top of that newspaper spread out some spanish moss to beautify the whole top! Just like the pros.

they BEST thing for you AND the plant AND the decorative pot is to NOT plant them directly in to the decorative pot.

I know the peace lily likes to be pot bound - he's had this one in the original nursery pot now for 3 years- the roots are growing out all the holes.

I finally came to the same conclusion as your suggestion- repot the peace lily into a slightly larger plastic nursery pot and then set that and a plastic tray inside the decorative pot. I still have a bunch of pots that the landscaper left me this spring. I'll have to check to see if I have the next larger size. Then my son can use either a cork round or felt to protect the floor from the rough bottom of the pot.

repotting this way makes it easier to repot again, or replace the plant altogether. It also saves the decorative pot and is easier to water.
