Making large wooden planter boxes for concrete patio?

Hi,

I have an extremely sunny part of my patio about 8' by 6' that gets all day direct sun. It's a concrete patio against a concrete retaining wall... so no digging it up. But I wondered if there was a way I could construct basically a square redwood planter box in the size of a raised bed, place it up on cinder blocks, and growing some of my veggies in it.

Trying to think creatively to use every single inch of growing space of my yard for edibles.

Any suggestions on making the underside of the box? Plywood would probably rot out too quickly.

I was thinking maybe using untreated redwood shiplap siding (i.e. with grooves) slid together with tons of holes in it.

I suppose I could also use the old oak wine barrels, but for about the cost of 6 or 7 of those I could probaby build these boxes, right?

Anybody doing something like this? Is it basically like a home made planter box but on a much much larger scale.

Thanks in advance for the ideas.
