large wooden planting boxes for roof deck

Hello there-- I have a roof deck that has been built to support a large roof garden. I want to start thinking about what planters I could put in. The biggest area is 8'x 4' x 24". I want to build the planter in rot resistant cedar or redwood, so the planter lasts for as many years as possible. But, I am concerned about how to build the bottom. I don't want to use wood for the bottom, because the wood will be consistently wet and won't last long. I have been thinking about using a base of 1" pipes placed about 1" apart down the length of the bottom. (this will support the weight of the wet soil) Then on top of that I might use a metal mesh to hold the dirt in, but allow water to drain. My thinking is if I keep wood off the bottom of the planter I will keep the planter from rotting. Any thoughts? I want to make the planter as rot resistant as possible-- since it will be so large and hard to replace.
