Success planting pumpkins in a small corn patch??

Stacey Collins

This is my first year with a garden big enough for corn, and I'm planning on a SMALL "learner" patch of about 8' x 12'. my books and catalogs say I can plant the rows 24" apart.

I would LOVE to save some space by planting my daughter's pumpkins underneath and among the corn rows. She's hoping for 6 or the compact/small vined types in this bed.

Will this work??????

I worry that the pumpkins won't get enough sun once the corn gets high. I wonder if the whole pumpkins-under-corn thing only works when you plant the corn in really wide rows...???

Has anyone done this successfully who can advise?

THANKS!
