water mellon corn patch

I have a 10ft by 10ft freshly dug and tilled garden with two rows of watermellon seeds and a watermellon plant on each end. The two rows of water mellons are on the east side of the garden and the two rows of corn are on the west side of the garden so when they grow tall they will only block the sun that will be blocked by the neighbors house to the west, blocking the falling sun. The water mellon / corn patch gets lots of sun and was planted today. I watered it very heavily, what felt like too much,

Is there anything I can do to this new patch to improve the odds of producing water mellons and corn and also how can I gauge how much will be produced - how many ears of corn, how many water mellons?
