go back 2-3 weeks more. If your first frost is Oct 10th and the days to maturity mean planting on Aug 10th then you want to plant in July. The reason I advise to go earlier by 2-3 weeks is a number of reasons. The first is we don't want frost to come when our plants just start producing, we want a good harvest period before the cold weather slows them down. Also, we can't control the weather and some years it stays warm longer than usual and plants grow well, but other years it cools early and our season gets cut short. While there are a number of 'cool season' plants, the truth is they all grow best in warm soil. One exception is many varieties of lettuce that won't germinate in very warm soil(just bring the containers inside until they germinate), but just about everything else will. With a young plant warm air temps aren't a problem, it is when the plant gets to maturity that the hot air temps will adversely affect it. By the time our summer planted fall crops get that far the temps are cooling so they do really well and often taste better than our spring planted, summer harvested plants.

Heuchera will go with so many plants...if for shadier location, maybe lady's mantle, siberian bugloss, 'cascading' type grass like japanese forest grass, creeping jenny, hosta, ferns (I love Maidenhair and Japanese painted and Ghost fern), and for something taller solomon's seal... For sunnier location you still could use heuchera, even with lamb's ear - and just about any other perennial or annual will go with lamb's ear. Cabbages would look good with it too. Or you can create more monochromatic container with other silvery plants (artemisia, dusty miller, licorice plant, silver sage, blue fescue...) I would plant euphorbia 'Diamond frost' in that container too...Rina

Would asparagus fern do well down there in the winter? It has such pretty foliage and is attractive in a container all by itself. Dianthus is also very pretty as would be some snap dragons or petunias. Swiss chard is just beautiful incontainers mixed with other cool season color like the snapdragons and pansies (but we know it is still a bit too early for those pansies.) I saw that mixture in some large containers out at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens one year. It was a very striking combination.

Update: I have about 15 zebra grasses planted all though my landscape and yesterday I cut half of them down to the ground. BUT this time I am applying roundup to them. Just giving up on them. Nothing I tried seems to prevent them from falling. Each year they have got worse. There is about 5 of them that dont do this so will be keeping them for now. I have several sun loving plants near the ones that keep falling like, spirea, daylillies and iris, There are some of these plants that dont look to good because when the zebra grass fell it drowned out all of the sunlight from them :( Also the zebra grass gets so big that when I cut them down its alot of material to dispose of. Cutting them yesterday they almost remind me of bamboo in a way. Also I noticed cutting them down they have some kind of fungus too. I also have about 20 maiden grasses on my landscape. The maiden grass is my favorite ornamental grass. A whole lot less maintenance, never have problems with falling and no signs of any fungus either. I will be transplanting maiden grass in late winter 2020 to the areas I am killing off the zebra grass. BTW : I tried digging the zebra grass up with a shovel. Nope lol. MAter of fact I just bougth a brand new shovel and i bent it trying to dig it out. It will be going back to home depot. I finally gave up and cut them down and used round up very heavy on the base and the roots that I exposed. I am hoping this kills them. I will keep reapplying roundup until they are toast. I will never plant zebra grass again.
