Comments (19)Moni, I wasn't gloating, I swear, just enjoying the brief, unexpected cool temps even though the rain mostly missed us. Laura, At least the butterfly garden is working out well this year.....and you'll soon have all the Supersweet 100s you can eat. In a year like this, you've got to look hard sometimes to find the positives! It is a good swallowtail year....we've had them all over the parsley we plant just for them for about a month now. I'm seeing more monarchs too than last year. Joellen, It's too late to take it back! Let's hope (and this is sort of a pitiful and sad kind of hope) Tropical Storm Alex blows into the Gulf of Mexico next week and sends moisture our way, either through Mexico or Texas (we'll take it however we can get it, won't we?). I'm not especially hoping Alex will intensify and reach Hurricane status, but would certainly appreciate it if he'd send us some rain. Paula, I cannot believe Ken is out working in this heat! Of course, it isn't like he has a choice about it. Still, the heat is brutal and I hope he doesn't have heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Maybe he's seeing mirages in the sky that look like thunderheads? It is so cruel to have showers pop up here and there and then miss us all. I long for one of those wonderful days where the rain pours down all over the state all at once so everyone is happy the same day! Y'all hang on. A cool front, a chance of showers and better weather is just a couple of days away. It isn't much, but for late June, it's about the most we can hope for. Comments (6)All the other "tall" blooming things I've tried in my yard--with 4-6 hours of sun--have also flopped, Misty! And if it's getting sun till 2:00, that's probably too hot for the taller shade things! You might think about an ornamental grass--possibly one of the taller (5-6') Miscanthus's (how do you spell the plural of Miscanthus???) If you ask me any questions, I may not be back to answer! Am currently looking out the front windows of my cabin at Sleeping Ute Mountain! I can see Ute Mountain---but I CANNOT see the Sleeping Ute! That's the only reason I'm inside and on the computer! Hope it clears up some! Have a ticket for the Twilight Tour at Cliff Palace this evening--and right now it looks like we might get RAINED on!!! (And could possibly get poured on tomorrow at the Ute Mountain Tribal Park! Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!) If I think of anything else and have a chance to come back to post, I will! Skybird P.S. When I took out the hollyhocks by the side of my shed, I put in a couple German iris for early color and a couple daylilies for later color. Not as tall, but they're working pretty well in the light I have! P.P.S. Greenstem has a really good grass reference chart and I was gonna link it for you to check out, but when I clicked on the site I got a message saying: This site could harm your computer!!! Don't know what's up with that! Sorry I don't have any other good grass sites to link for you!...See MoreWhy does my atemoya tree's flowers keep falling off unfertilized?
Comments (28)Yeah, three or four years is pretty good. My cherimoya that I got from Home Depot last year flowered this year in late May thru June. I successfully hand pollinated about ten flowers, got fruitlets that grew to about 10mm. Over the course of the past two to three weeks, the fruitlets decided to drop on their own, leaving me with now three of the smallest fruitlets that I doubt will make it to harvest. :( i guess they drop because this is their first year flowering and producing fruit?...See MoreAny way to keep hawks from nesting in my yard?
Comments (80)I have a pocket of oak trees in my front yard that is home to many creatures. We had a hawk in our tree one year and that bird was such a messy, wasteful eater- dead birds and squirrels everywhere. I put up an eagle decoy and moved it around but it didn’t do much. The hawks moved to the neighbor across the street the next year. And then to the neighbor next door after that. IDK if it’s the same bird or maybe there’s more than one bird/family. They do flybys and hunt in my yard but they dont live in it anymore. I thoroughly enjoy watching this little microcosm of forest life...most times. The kids were yelling one day to come look at the window. A heron was in my little backyard pond and was eating my fish like it was a buffet....See MoreRandy Man
