Zinnias

HI, I have grown some zinnias from seed. They have grown very beautiful and some of them are tall and leggy, but I notice every morning as soon as the beautiful blooms are there, something is eating the petals right off. The inside where the stamen is is still there, but all the colourful petals are gone!! This is very frustrating, I know that all kinds of butterflies and small butterflies are on them, but I cannot imagine that the butterflies are picking off the petals.

Has anyone else had this experience? I tried to spray w/Sevin, to make it taste bad for what ever is eating them up, but I think then my butterflies will get a bad taste in their mouths.

Once I saw a bird sitting on the blooms, could it be that this particular bird, which likes berries and cherries, is also mutilating my zinnias?

Thanks for your help.

Ursula
