Zinnias and powdery mildew
Comments (3)Many types of zinnia are prone to powdery mildew. I've found that in my garden that it is more unsightly than anything else. The plants will continue to bloom. The best way to limit the spread of the mildew is to water the soil, not the plants. Try to keep the foliage dry. Also, if the area is very crowded, thinning out some of the plants will help to improve air circulation. This will allow the plant foliage to dry more quickly. Finally, don't let the soil dry out too much. If the plants get stressed they are more prone to disease as well. I've had my zinnia planted tightly amongst other plants. They will get mildew if it's too rainy or humid, but the other types of plants around them never seem to be bothered. Ultimately, if the look of the mildew really bothers you, I say pull them. You want to enjoy your garden, not worry about mildew. If it was me, I'd leave them. You can also try to trim out the most heavily infected parts of the plants and/or pull up a few plants if they are overcrowded. Comments (5)To Ken_adrian: Thanks for the advice, but I am not one to give up on a plant because I had a problem with it for a little while during 1 season. I have dealt with issues with dahlias as well from time to time, like slugs, spider mites and tree hoppers, but I stiIl grow them. I think some things are worth a little extra effort, and its really not that much more effort anyway to be honest. I grew the same variety of zinnias about 2 years prior to last year's powdery mildew, and at that time I had more zinnias in a more shaded area that tended to hold moisture/humidity moreso than this new area does, yet I didnt have any problem with powdery mildew at that time. I dont mind having to take 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a season mixing up some spray solution and coating the plants with a safe, relatively non-toxic spray that helps prevent fungus if it means having 5-6 foot tall flowering plants that continuously flower from June til early November. I will also try to keep them more ventilated. Maybe they were too close last year. But we also had a generally wet first half of summer....See MoreCarolyn - Mildew resistant toms
Comments (2)What variety can I replant that might have the most mildew resistance? Hard to explain why, but I have maybe 60 different varieties in 4" pots begging to be planted, both heirloom selected for earliness and hybrids selected for disease resistance. So I might have the variety that you would suggest! Thanks a bunch, Gary ***** Gary, I'm not aware of any variety, hybrid or OP, that has any increased tolerance to mildew, of which there are two kinds which can affect the tomatoes of those of you in CA coastal areas. While the most common diseases of tomatoes are the foliage diseases, finding relatively tolerant varieties has not been particularly successful. That is, no genes that would lend significant tolerance if bred in have been IDed to date. The mildews that affect tomatoes are not the same as those that affect roses and Phlox and Zinnias and Monarda, for example, and the thus the Cornell Baking Soda formula does not work. The best thing to do, although I know you don't want to, is to be on a regular spray program with a good anti-fungal such as Ortho Garden Disease Control.
