lone tulip i did not plant... care???

i have no idea how to care for tulips! I have one lone little tulip with leaves about 2in tall now... temps have been in the high 60s but tonight the low is 26. am i supposed to water him, or should i just leave the thing alone and let him do his thing?

I know this is late, but I say let him do his thing. Watering would not have hurt either though as tulips are quite rugged.

Let him do his thing. Nice of you to water him, but I doubt it'd make much of a difference unless you're in a huge drought. Plus I believe lots of bulbs are native to arid climates like the Middle East, Mediterranean, and South Africa so they don't need huge amounts of water.

No it should be okay, but make certain that you mix in compost or manure when you plant and a handful of bone meal. Usually forced bulbs have all their energy sapped, but they could still bloom next year. Here is a link that might be useful: Propagating Perennials

If you want a display similar to this year's you probably need to get some fresh bulbs. Not because there's anything wrong with the 'old' ones. It's just that they tend to produce daughter bulbs and those won't be big enough to flower and give the mass of red you might be hoping for. You might want to consider leaving the bulbs in the ground - unless you know they'll face gourmand rodents . They seem to bulk up better when undisturbed.

I expect your helpful neighbor meant store in the frig., Not the freezer. On the other hand, I imagine you would have noticed if the bulbs were soft and soggy (after they thawed out), and that would be the clue that they were no good. And, who knows, maybe they are just whining about being moved, and will appear when darn good and ready. Pondy

No need to water. I think what you should consider is that the tulip gods put it there to make you fall in love with tulips. Since you found your way to the gardenweb bulb forum I think you are probably on your way. :)
