I feel like we left off on a bad note. I was seeking your help with trying a mix between your media and mine. Let me start by repeating what I usually use:

2 parts perlite (for aeration)

1 part vermiculite (for moisture and nutrient retention)

1 part pea gravel (for more aeration and drainage)

1/2 part live "humus" (made in a bin for the colloidal structure and microbes)

I was thinking of trying turface MVP for the CEC, but I am unsure if this will cause a water retention issue with the vermiculite. I would like to get your opinion on a mix that still includes my composted humus (I know you disagree but I have found it invaluable through my trial and error).

I was thinking:

1 part turface

1 part perlite

1 part gravel

1/2 part humus

I have access to perlite, vermiculite, pea gravel, crushed granite, turface, bark and peat moss (I really detest peat moss because it makes soup, not soil).

As far as conditions I live in 9b in Fl, high humidity during summer, low in winter, I water as needed (usually that is daily) with diluted 12-4-8 fert (micros with foliar spray). I will be using the mix for vegetables, namely tomatoes, beans, and lettuce (if it works well I'll use it to repot my herbs and roses).

Any coments would be appreciated and I am open to suggestions.

I don't know how I can help, Bob, other than to make some general comments. I had several paragraphs written and I deleted them because they sounded preachy to me, and I don't want to come off that way.

I would suggest you're careful that the peastone isn't too large. Mixed with the Turface & perlite, it may have a tendency to separate if it's indeed 'pea' size or larger.

FWIW - if you're using vermiculite in the hope of increasing CEC, it's good to remember that CEC is measured on a per weight basis, but in container culture, we work on a per volume basis. Example: While on a per weight basis the CEC of exfoliated vermiculite is about 3X greater than that of, say Turface, Turface has a bulk density at least 7X greater than that of vermiculite, making it a much better choice re that particular property on a per volume basis.

Yes - I've grown several species of impatiens in the bark recipe. What the soil is made of is largely unimportant, so long as it holds air, water, and nutrients in favorable proportions and will retain its physical structure for the life of the planting. That's why I like bark-based soils: great aeration and structural durability. It's difficult to give a definitive answer on what to fertilize with, and how often. Soil porosity, your watering habits, and temperatures all play into the decision. I suppose that if you were using a mix like mine that drains freely, and were watering freely enough that a fair amount of water flushes the soil at each watering, You could fertilize with your favorite soluble fertilizer and/or fish/seaweed emulsion at full recommended strength every two weeks while the plant is growing with good vitality. During hot or cold spells when growth slows, increase the interval to three weeks. I've used a 20-20-20 soluble fertilizer, MG or equal, along with (applied at same time) 2-3-1 fish emulsion and had very good results in fast soils. Whether you wick or not depends on several factors. How open and free-draining the soil is, how deep the container is, and how "mature" the planting is. Shallow containers have a higher percentage of saturated soils when perched water is an issue and more likely to appreciate wicking. Open soils, mature plantings, and deeper containers are less likely to need wicking Here is what I would do: Plant your container & water thoroughly. If your container goes two days without needing water, a wick will be helpful at insuring air returns to the lower reaches of the container more quickly. This will allow roots to establish throughout the container. Leave the wick in place until the planting shows signs of wilting before a day is up. At that time - remove the wick and it will (re)extend the irrigation interval. Impatiens are fairly inefficient at extracting water from soils that feel dry to the touch, even though there might still be 10 - 15% moisture available to other, more efficient plants, so keep soil evenly moist. They do not appreciate saturated soils and will rebel at soggy feet. A tip: Keep foliage as dry as you can, and do not splash water onto the lower leaves (from soil) when watering. They can be very susceptible to a number of leaf-spot diseases. Al

nomen, use your judgement regarding how to grow your plants under your conditions and lifestyle. What works for one person doesn't mean it works for another. I get in trouble on this forum when I suggest other methods of potting outdoor plants, especially large container plants. There are other suggestions which include bark which holds some moisture longer than pure gritty mix. Large containers are a challenge because they take a lot of water. Someone growing small plants and plants which do not like to watered often (succulents) are easier to deal with outside. I live in Florida, my large container plants dry out quickly as we have little rain and intense heat. I do use a potting mix which holds moisture longer so I don't have to deal with watering constantly. I use rain barrels and do have to fill large buckets and watering cans to carry to the plants. I do not use our tap water. It has damaged some of my plants and I only use rain water. Florida water is terrible. One thing I use is a time release fertilizer on my large plants. It works. That is something you might consider so you don't have to mix fertilizer. If your tap water is good, you can hose your plants down and they get fed with each watering. I feel large container plants need to looked at in a different way from small, little plants. You have to do what works for yourself and your plants. My suggestion would be to try adding some moisture retaining material to your potting mix so your plants can wait a week or longer. I know I will get criticized for telling you that but it is what I do and it works for me. You need to figure out what works best for you. I understand where you are coming from. I'm a 67 yr old woman who doesn't do well trying to lug 5 gallon containers of water around the year in blistering heat. But I found what works for me. That's what its all about. Trying to find a balance which works for your lifestyle without feeling guilty. Your plants will let you know if they are happy and if they look sad, you'll adjust things. As far as pruning, not so much help from me. Al is the expert. Only bonsai growers really understand the science of proper pruning. As for me, I prune both roots and branches in spring. Unless the plant is in bad shape, I do not do a lot of root pruning, only green pruning. I do not watch the calendar, I watch the plant and its growth. Spring is when I do all my pruning. Yes, you CAN grow producing fruit trees in containers. I have at least a couple of dozen fruiting trees as bonsai, and usually remove the blossoms of developing trees as they occur, in order to force the tree to direct it's energies to vegetative growth as opposed to blooms/fruit. Your goal is different in that you WANT the fruit, so your strategy would be slightly different than mine. I'm not sure you can say that my suggestions re growing trees in pots are BASED on bonsai techniques, if only for the fact that the techniques I describe are essential to the long term vitality of any tree grown in a pot. IOW, you'll need to know how to prune the top and how to effectively manage the root system, which includes root-pruning on a regularly every 2 or 3 years, max. In many cases, trees listed as 'dwarf' varieties aren't true dwarfs. They might only be a given variety grafted onto dwarfing root stock. Bonsai folk tend to choose dwarf varieties that have smaller leaves, and shy away from grafted trees because of the fact that A) the graft union isn't always pretty, and B) the texture and appearance of the bark on the understock compared to that on the scion is usually readily seen. Thanks Al, I might for go the vermiculite to use turface instead. I remember reading (it might have been one of your posts or another source, not sure) that the shape of crushed granites and marbles induces branching in the roots, if this is true then I might use one of these products instead of the gravel.
Usually the gravel is about the same size as the perlite (if not slightly larger), what size granite would you recommend?

Ideal would be 3/32 to 3/16". PWTs disappear as uniform particle size approaches about .110".

So now my revised mix is:
1 part perlite (sifted to remove dust)
1 part turface (1/16"-1/8")
1 part crushed granite (~1/16"-3/16")
Handful / container humus (just a top dressing really)
I think this will be a good place to start. Thanks for the help Al, I really do appreciate it.

Uh, Bob,
This past spring of 2011, I grew the best tomato crop I ever had, in free-draining, 6.5 gallon buckets, using a modified version of Al's 5-1-1 container mix. He and I discussed at GREAT, GREAT, GREAT lengths, and I worked with a 3-1-1 mix of:
3 parts pine bark fines
1 part perlite
1 part MG potting mix as the peat component (re-purposed from the previous season...)

I watered with a water soluble fertilizer in his recommended ratio of a 3-1-2, using MG Water Soluble Plant food for Veggies (24-8-16).

I am a very happy person...sure wish I knew how to post pics on this website....

I'm thinking 7 gal containers for mine (white because of the heat in Orlando), filled with the new mix I listed above, I'm debating on adding bark or not. I am not a fan of peat based mixes at all, the only organic component I like is my humus because it does not decompose any more (humus is what you get when organic matter is broke down as far as it can ,
It litteraly cant breakdown more) but it does eventually dissipate and fill in some of the air holes. Although it is peat based, it is no longer peat, it is truly colloidal humus.
Your mix does have the components of a good mix: aeration, water retention, high adsobancy, and slow decomp. It would be great for our winters here, but no peat will withstand Florida humidity and heat in summer.
For fert I use a low, continual dose of MG 12-4-8 with a few othe components so I can attend to the plants individual needs, but for some seasons I just do straight MG; results are good but not as good, but still better than people who use straight potting soil.

Bob, I'm very interested in hearing about how your experiment turns out. I'm not a fan of peat myself, but the 5:1:1 is working great for me so far. I'm looking forward to seeing your updates!
