How tall should console table in entry hall be?

My entry hall has tall ceilings....it is open through the second floor of my home. I would like to purchase a console table to put near the front door and decorate it. I found one I like, but it is only 30 inches tall. That seemed short to me, so I looked at some others and they all seem to be around that height. Does that sound right or is it going to look ridculously short with my tall ceilings? Also, the entry has a chair rail that goes around it.....the 30" table would come up just below it. Are there any rules on how high the table should be in relation to the chair rail? Thanks!!

You could also get a very large mirror and sit it behind the console. See inspiration pictures below. Click on picture to enlarge.

Console tables are almost always 30" the height of your ceiling has nothing to do with that.Put a big mirror above it and make sure it is long enough and heavy enough to look in scale to the hallway.

30" is a common height for console/sofa/buffet tables unfortunately. I ALWAYS feel that they are too short. You can sometimes find them approx. 36" or 40-42". They're much more difficult to find, but they are out there! I'd try for one of those, especially with your ceiling height which will make furniture feel slightly dwarfed. If you have trouble finding one you really like, get a shorter one and accessorize it to look taller or place a pair of tall table lamps on it or floor lamps to each side to give a visual impression of height. I find that most consoles are only 30" in height. It's hard to find anything taller and something longer than 42".

and nothing in the hallway? I do feel I need the foot trafficked areas to have rugs to protect my floors. I like the idea of a wider rug in the entry area, but I still want a runner in the hall. I guess I’m just lost on how to approach mixing and matching rugs in a contiguous area.

Furniture arrangement would depend on how you use the furniture. Example, if you tell me that you always use the lounge chair to watch tv, then unlikely sofa along the window will work well. Without further info, with sofa in front of window, chairs would face fireplace and lounge chair on left side of fp. For a very open feel, you could be sofa along window and chairs where they are. Is there an outside chance that lounge chair and sofa could fit along window wall. (Doesn't seem like it).

It is also worth note that moving a light switch is fairly easy and shouldn’t be too expensive even with a pro. Point is - don’t let that dictate your choices. Don’t let yourself spend a ton of money working around it when moving it is an easy option too. Good luck. Lots of good ideas here already.

I have also found many console tables to feel short for the entryway. Many console tables are designed/meant to go behind a sofa, which a shorter height would be ideal. I would suggest finding a sideboard or narrow buffet table to use as an entryway console. Many are a few inches taller (32-36 inches) and basically can serve the same purpose. Ballard, Ethan Allen and Crate and Barrel have several options.

30 inches is too short. Even though they say a foyer table can be 30-36 inches. The minimum really should be 34" in my opinion, otherwise it looks too short even with a mirror. unfortunate because some I like are also 30",
