Horribly, this question may become much more pertinent as developers close in around the allotments. We are surrounded on all sides by buildings several storeys high and feel that it is merely a matter of time before we get the heave-ho. So, I have seriously considered this prospect: too precious to abandon: The most common class of roses on my plot are the hybrid musks, for the good reason that they flourish and put out a flush in the autumn which is the equal, if not better, than the first explosion of blossom. So, MOONLIGHT would be kept. Funnily enough, I must concur with Kim and pick either Blue for You or Eyes for You - tricky but will stick with EYES FOR YOU as it is unusual, astoundingly healthy and very floriferous. Then there are the wildlings of which I will be greedy and keep 3: R.MOYESII, R.HUGONIS, R.CALIFORNICA (PLENA) (I am counting these as one as several of you have not just stuck with a mere 5) On to the climbers and ramblers with a very difficult decision but, after much grief, I think AYRESHIRE SPLENDENS makes the cut. A rose which will sprawl or climb, can be pillared ar espaliered, draped over a stump or scrambling down a bank, a delicately beatiful rose. Finally, because I love it, MADAME GREGOIRE STAECHELIN - this was the 'gateway' rose for me and I have remained faithful to its beauty. To go: For obvious (to me) reasons - FALSTAFF, CREPUSCULE (this is just a bit feeble)PENNY LANE - boringly generic, too formal and just not really to my taste. JUDE THE OBSCURE - I honestly would not be too sorry to see the back of all my austins (not that there are more than 6) apart from Graham Thomas which performs stunningly well in the fortuitous spot it was allocated. Finally, although it has astoundingly good blooms with long thornless stems, lasting for ages in the vase, it also defoliates almost completely so it is bye-bye PHILLIPPA, a renaissance rose from Poulsen. Good thread, Vettin, and a fear I really, really hope is not too imminent.

That depends upon room, Jimmy. If you have a limited space and the once flowering rose is huge, why would you want to keep it? You'd have to whack it so severely it wouldn't flower. It seems more in line with my personal aesthetics to take the ones which flower continuously so the room would be as colorful as possible and which would fit the spaces best. You will soon begrudge something with less colorful time its space, time and other resources. Think of the others in the household, too. If it's big, potentially diseased due to not being able to grow as large as it needs to remain well fed from the foliage cover and wood it needs genetically, and is always just green and thorny, how will your parents and anyone else who views it refer to it? Will they begrudge it the space and water because it seldom pleases them? I'd think they would be much more agreeable to the rose's intrusion on their room if it flowered constantly so it provided them eye candy. Kim

Hi, Here's a list of what to keep from Clark Howard's website. He's a no nonsense all around money guy. His radio show and website are filled with valuable info on what papers to keep, as well as many other money issues. This doesn't cover receipts in general, but is a great help for that other related stuff. There are probably ideas for receipts too if you do a search there. As far as receipts for everyday purchases, if I think it may be needed later, I take a fat Sharpie pen and write what the item is in large print on the receipt so it's easily read, and just put wherever my current papers are piled or filed. Receipts for large purchases are with the other info on the item, in a ziploc bag, taped to the item. If it's a kitchen appliance, it's taped on the back. Water heater is right on front, along with a business card from my plumber. Furniture receipts can be stapled to the bottom of most pieces. There are lots of good tips on this thread. If receipts are being saved in case of fire or other disaster, remember that with the stuff also goes the receipts. I would add to make sure you have everything important, especially pictures, backed up away from your home. Computers make that very easy now, even though it can be time consuming. Ahhh Cori Ann, I share your enthusiasm; the late fall flush is so nice to observe especially after a late summer hammering by CLM! I use a combination of sprays, powders, shovels, guns, and an assortment cloths, lamps and screens (for freezes). - that is - when I can get to it. Some of it works only some of the time so I may just shut the windows and not look until February. BTW: if your Meyers are not pushing new growth of a pretty, dark reddish-tint color (during the main growing sessions), they are not getting enough food.
