Under the Hot Tub waterproofing disaster
Comments (0)So, we have a hot tub sitting in the dedicated room in the third floor condo. We had remodel the room and installed a new hot tub last February. It sits on the foundation of 2x12 with 2x4 Versa studs on top of it. There is a layer of plywood with Kerdi board cemented to it and tile on top - see the pictures attached. We were supposed to have a final walk through of our remodelled condo and decided to do final "water test" yesterday by pouring water on top of the hot tub room "waterproofed" floor - neighbor from below came up runing - the water comes raining from his ceiling ((. Upon inspection many tiles that Hot Tub seats upon appears loose. Now, my GC thinks that the joists might have given away and sinked, even so structural engineer is 99.9% sure its' not so. Any ideas? Pictures of the construction attached. Will have to wait till the weekend is over before tearing it all appart, but I would like to get suggestions on how to build that water proofing membrane under the hot tub right this time. I just think that 1 layer of plywood might have not been strong enough to support the tub? Help, please ......See MoreWhich type caulking best for under kitchen sink sealing ?
Comments (4)Joseph, you mentioned in a separate post that silicone can stain certain quartzites. Your comment was not to use silicone to seal soap dispenser holes. Is silicone safe around the undermount sink in a quartzite countertop?...See MoreUnder-mount kitchen sink
Comments (3)They're using Black Mamba or similar. I've never used it because I don't know how thin the bead can be, whether or not it will look good with a slight positive sink reveal, and reverseability. I finally had a warranty call on a composite sink today. We released the straps, dropped the sink, cleaned the silicone off the flange and stone bottom, replaced the sink, and were done in several hours, plumbing included. I don't know if that would happen with a polymer sealant sink. Epoxied sinks can be a disaster....See MoreChronic leak under kitchen cabinets-faulty sink install?
Comments (5)Your gap is too wide; there should be no gap. Disconnect the drain lines/disposal and remove the sink from the cabinet. You may have to unscrew the clips. If you can't get access to the screws, place a stiff scraper between the sink flange and the stone bottom and hammer the scraper into the screws; they will fail and the sink will drop. Scrape the old caulk from the sink flange and stone bottom. Install a Hercules Universal Sink Harness (BB Industries) to the cabinet sides. Run a pipe clamp through a 2x4 that spans the larger bowl and the drain hole and pull the sink to within 1" of the stone bottom. Silicone the flange, tighten the clamp, position the sink for the proper reveal, tighten the HUSH, remove the clamp, spritz the squeeze-out with Windex, spit on your finger, wipe up the squeeze-out, connect the drain lines and you're done. This may be a 3-hour job the first time you do it; it takes any man of my crew just over an hour. Without replacing your countertop, there is no other proper way to fix this. More topical silicone is useless. Your sink failed because of the clips and the fact that you have a divided sink with steel on the flat which flexed and caused the leak. A strapped divided sink cannot flex without defying the laws of physics. This repair is permanent and you will never have black/brown crud at your stone/sink flange joint again because it will never leak again. To other readers, if you have black/brown recurring crud at your sink flange/stone bottom, your sink is leaking. If the gap were smaller it wouldn't leak; if it were larger, you could clean it with that toothbrush you've been trying. It's just the right size to allow capillary action; sucking and trapping dirty sink water. Gross. This is what it looks like under there: In addition, a leaking sink endangers your reinforcement rod which can blow up your countertop: Now you're getting a new sink:...See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
