Asked for 15 inch counter overhang with supports, got 12

Our Taj Mahal quartzite was installed today. They cut us a 12 inch overhang when I asked for 15 and he agreed to that with supports. Have not talked to them yet, so I don't know where the mistake happened. I have email correspondence with me asking and them agreeing to the 15 inches. On Monday they sent me the cad drawing and two photo options for seams. I did not see nor do the math to realize at that time that it was 12 on that drawing. What would you do? What do you think would be an appropriate course of action? The 12 inches is okay for me, but isn't so great (but livable) for my 6'2" husband. Thanks!

I would want it redone. You asked for a 15 inch over hang and they agreed to a 15 inch over hang. This was an error on their part.

Countertop people do not design or install supports into cabinetry. You do not want hacks touching your cabinets. That is the responsibility for your Kitchen Designer to install. And your cabinet installer or GC to install. A stone supplier merely installs what is actually safe, onto the existing substrate that is provided. If the support was not designed and installed before the template, there is zero way of installing 15” of overhand that would be safe.

If you have an issue with what was done, it lies with your GC and KD.

You'll need new skins, wider than 48''. Detach the full height cabinets under the proposed overhang. Attach 2 2x4 pressure treated pieces of lumber to the slab with a Hilti or ramset where I show the RED lines. Also use some construction adhesive. Yes, I like belts and suspenders. :) Build a 34.5''H pony walls with conventional framing techniques, taking the wall to the end of the cabinets. Attach the existing cabinets to the pony wall. Reattach the full height cabinets to the pony wall studs. Here is where you will need the custom steel for the 33'' long steel pieces (BLUE) needed to support the overhang. You will also need 12'' ones for the side overhang. They cannot be flat steel, as that is too flexible. 1'' tubing is too thick for your full overlay cabinets, even with the doors adjusted as far down as they will go. You could use 2''W flat 1/4" steel with a 3/8'' ridge welded to it to create rigidity, in a T shape, flat side up. Holes would need to be drilled into it to attach to the pony wall. Once the steel is sourced and created, you can rout out the pony wall (2 step process, once for the ridge, once for the flat stock) and top of the face frame to accept it. Once the steel is attached, then the skins (GREEN) can be applied to the sides and ends to cover the pony wall. You may want some Outside Corner molding and Batten molding as well to hide the seams. This is a serious design deficiency on your KD's part. He should arrange for the cabinetry materials gratis, and also pay something toward the steel. Labor for this will need to have good experience dealing with finished cabinets and routing, so let the KD pay something towrds that as well.

This has really turned into a mixed topic thread - but I'm back to the original overhang support issue. I checked out the supports in the link Katrina posted and Joe said he thought were good. They all require notching the top edge of the cabinet. With IKEA, there is that metal bar that spans the tops of their base cabinets from side to side in the front as well as the back. That's what actually supports the counter and it obviously can't be notched. So I'm back to my original idea which was to run a steel tube bar across the span supported by pony walls on each end of the overhang. (Joe said the fabricator could even embed this into the solid surface but I'm not sure I would bother with that). I would put bar about 6 inches from the edge of the counter - midway of the 12" overhang depth. I understand that we need to be sure the top edge of the bar is perfectly flush with the top edge of the counter supports on the cabinets (those pesky metal bars that IKEA uses on top of the base cabinets). Is there any reason that wouldn't work? I am trying to contact my fabricator to discuss this, but in the area where I am doing this kitchen, there are no nearby IKEA's so I'm pretty sure he wont even understand how IKEA cabinets are made.

The cabinet maker just told me that the posts will be constructed using MDF board to create a solid block. I imagine that is probably Ok, since they bear the load vertically, but if he suggests using MDF for the apron stretchers, that would be a definite no, am I right? I will definitely talk to the cabinet maker about adding cross pieces. Also, suppose that instead of 2 x 3 1/8 inch for the stretcher boards, I asked him to use square "beams" of 3 1/8 inch. Would that add more strength and combat warping? I'm not sure I can get a custom made steel frame. That is highly custom work here and would add several thousand euros to the cost. The legs and apron alone is probably going to set me back 3K.

I disagree with lwo. In my days as a top fabricator, I designed, fabricated, and installed all my cantilever supports. Never a failure and never a callback. Any supports by anyone else would get my approval or the tops weren't going in. I've picked up after too many designers.

Even the videos by the bracket manufacturers are wrong. They show their steel-on-the-flat bars being let into knee walls that have the top plate end nailed to the studs. Gravity smashes the wood at the bottom of the outermost nail, the top tilts and breaks the bar seam if there is one. The top plate must be fastened to the studs with framing connectors for the brackets to work properly. I've fixed this one a million times. Most fabricators, GCs, and designers don't know this; the repair man does.

As Joe said, if you signed off on the plan, it is what it is. That is the whole idea why fabricators, etc ask for signature approvals to make sure everyone is on the same page and that is exactly what customer wants so there is no bickering after the fact.

That said good luck and 12" overhang will work just fine.

Thanks all. The company has been great. Owned up to the mistaken change on their part and offer a significant discount or redo with another slab. They have been very responsive and gone above and beyond to make sure we're content. 😊
