NIghtowl's Pine Island -- how to stain and what hardware?
Comments (23)The VP didn't like my grey direction, so we experimented and finally agreed on a process that is a grey base, but shows tans and greens in the foreground. It is coming out ...hahaha... NOT quiet like the sample board we stressed and fussed over to agree, but unique and agreeable to us both nonetheless. The direction the island took us prompted a last minute top decision change. It will now be marble and we will welcome etches and stains with open arms. Now that it is coming together, we are revising our choice of pulls. Originally was going with long wire pulls. Now I am researching finger (tab) pulls. (will that work with inset?) Stainless on the white cabs and dark metal on the island. #williteverend...See MorePlease help review our proposed layout
Comments (59)I have had a MW drawer since early 2008 and use it several time a day every day. I have had no problems with it. In fact, with one exception, it has outlasted all my "cheaper" countertop MWs by 4 years or more...so factor that in when you do a cost benefit analysis. The one that lasted the longest was a big Montgomery Ward's MW Convection Oven I bought in the mid-80s -- it lasted around 10 years. The one that lasted the least amount of time was a Panasonic (about 2 years). Sharp and Amana lasted about 4 or 5 years each. Note that I did not buy cheap countertop MWs b/c I happen to like the bells & whistles -- I use them all the time. My countertop models cost $250 to $300, I think. (It's been over 10 years now since I bought the last one, so they might have cost less...I just don't know for certain.) My 30" MW Drawer cost $800. So if the MW Drawer lasts another 4 years or so, I will have "broken even" with 3 countertop models at $300 lasting approx 5 years each. After that, I'm ahead of the game! The 24" MW drawers cost less than 30" and are the same size, so don't get a 30" model. . If the MW drawer is a budget-buster, then I suggest a countertop model installed above the counter (hanging from the upper cabinet) b/w the range and Laundry Room wall. However, you will probably have to move the range toward the sink another 6 to 9 inches to accommodate it. With the exception of, I think Bosch, all countertop MWs open with the hinge on the left, so this is the best location. [There is one that opens like an oven, but I don't know for certain that it's a Bosch nor am I certain it's a countertop model -- it might be designed to be installed as a built-in, which will then make it more expensive. The brand name may also make it more expensive...] Make sure the interior of the alcove for the MW is finished to match the exterior of the cabinets. That will add to the cost, but it will probably still be less than a MW drawer....See MoreFunctional Butcher Block inset to granite on prep island, where to buy
Comments (16)bardzil, we are still in the midst of our rather lengthy reno, so no butcher block yet.. however: I'm sticking with the built in as rendered above, but making it 30 x 30 so I've got 12" of granite showing at the end of our island. At 30" wide, 2" thickness is fine, and our granite is 1-1/4" thick. We are having a ledge cut out from the edges of underside of the butcher block so it will overlap the granite, preventing food from mucking it so badly. So the butcher block will stand proud of the counter top a bit less than 3/4" inches. My good cutting board is right at that thickness, so the height will be perfect. And I am going with end grain - I prefer it for my knives, and I like the looks. It will be screwed in from the underside, and some years from now, if needed, we can give it a sanding to look like new. I'll slather it with mineral oil....See MoreNew Kitchen Design - Elderwood
Comments (14)I wonder if the fridge is a bit far from all the action (ie dining, living, outdoors). (Perhaps not surprisingly) I would think about having it where the "Pantry" currently is listed (leaving some pantry cabinets around it + adding others to the fridge's previous location) =) Thoughts on the counters/cabinets along that top stretch? I had also assumed you wouldn't have seating there - are you envisioning a two-tier counter? Underneath the non-sink section of counter (ie where the higher tier could go) you could have a long bank of cabinets to help with storage. The gallery idea came up before - and I bet something gorgeous could be designed! I think my only hesitation with that set up would be the temptation to cut through the main working part of the kitchen when going from one side of the house to the Master. Final thought: making the island just a few inches deeper - though I'm not sure its current dimensions. Basically just to make sure there's sufficient space along that edge for bowls/plates to put your freshly prepped goods! Also too, you could then have a bank of i.e. drawers that face the dining room for even more storage! #AllTheStorage...See MoreUser
