Help! Tight Budget! Need to Update My Kitchen!
Comments (13)If it's considered an entry level condo - that is a starter home - I wouldn't change anything major. Just paint the walls a neutral color, clean and edit the items on the counter. Remove the multiple towels and dated canisters. If you have a Home Goods or Crate and Barrel nearby check out new stylish towels. Keep the counters totally clutter free. Clean out the cabs and de-clutter. Allow the next buyer to do the upgrades and updates to their taste. The previous posters are right that some upgrades will actually turn buyers off. In my area of middle suburbia, it is granite on old cabinets that have seen better days, especially if the layout isn't great. If your cooktop is older, around 8 - 10 years or going out - this may be an item to consider updating along with matching hood since you already have the SS oven. The newer appliances are a great selling point on an older home. I've bought a couple of houses where the old 1980's stoves were downright scary. Check out clearance, closeouts, craigslist or sears outlet for a good deals. As the others posted, new lighting can help brighten up the space. You don't have a picture of the sink, but if the faucet is old and dated, that could also be a great upgrade for not a lot of money. My personal favorite, the one I currently own is this Moen Brantford: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-25ecodZ5yc1v/R-202998687/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=moen+kitchen+faucet&storeId=10051#.UJvZF6UTBvc I don't know what your lighting and flooring is like, but a neutral color I love is called Autumn Haze. The color is by Glidden. I've staged and sold 3 houses since 2003. The following pictures are the kitchens from the two most recent. Both of these have oak cabinets. The most recent (1st) had 20 year old laminate counters. The wall paint was Behr Sand Pearl. The 2nd one actually had tile counters. It was newer with the original builder paint, except for the blue/green color. I had 2 toddlers and a baby and didn't have time to repaint and neutralize....See MoreDownsized in real life. Comments (110)This house was 1700sf, but I want to "age in place" so I added a first-floor master suite, laundry and a new kitchen. The stairs are narrow, without a handrail, so I didn't want to use the upstairs master (it's now my studio)! The person before me lived here 30 years and had one of those lift chairs until she finally had to go into assisted living. The old kitchen didn't have original cabinets and there was only 1.5 feet (really) on two sides of the island, the cabinets were only 1 foot deep and the 1980s fridge couldn't be removed without removing the island (width of the sink and dw only). The rooms are on a 12' wide scale. So, my new master and kitchen are 12'x12'. My previous home that my husband and I built was over 4000 sf on 4.5 acres. I was an avid gardener (and blogger). I don't have the gardening/blogging in me anymore. I have 1/2 acre here....See MoreKitchen Aid side by side refrigerator '02, can I update the handles?
Comments (8)Not what you asked, but here is my 2 cents.... I get not wanting to replace an appliance that still works.... just make sure the sizes of your current appliances are standard & finding replacements will be easy to find/fit in your new space. You don't want to spend tons of $$ on a new kitchen & in 6 months have the fridge break-down & be limited in what you can put in its place. We recently helped my mom renovate a kitchen & she planned to keep her appliances. Her GC pointed out her stove wasn't standard (it was weirdly big) / her fridge was kind of small & building a new kitchen around old appliances wasn't a great idea....See MoreVeggie Tales ... Comments (7)Happy new gardening year! It was a green December around here, we only got one snow that lasted a couple days before it was melted off. Rain otherwise. Rather uncanny. But it has turned properly colder now. Got no idea what's going on in the caps, haven't opened them. The rest of the yard looks like it's still sleeping. Been lots of small birds flocking about in the last couple weeks, but there seems to be a bit less ground rodent activity than the usual for now. Sitting on a bunch of wild wintersowing seed since it's been so nice out, so probably won't sow till late this month or into the next. Indoors has been some microgreens and a couple rounds of germination testing. I had some trouble last year with squash and melon and wasn't sure if it was due to the seed. I haven't gotten fresh in a while. So tests before sending off seed orders- just a couple smaller ones this year....See Morerebasheba
