Remodel & 2nd story addition
The project involved architectural design services for the addition to, and remodeling of, a one-story mid-century modern home. The owners have two small children. The size and configuration of the spaces, the shape of the kitchen, and limited storage space did not suit the immediate or long term needs of the family and it was determined that the issues would become exacerbated over time.

The design goals included:
• Reconfigure/remove walls to create more open space and to improve circulation and flow;
• adding additional space including a second floor. (One of the challenges became adapting two-story concepts to what had originally been designed as a one-story structure.)
• supporting and enhancing the existing architecture
• molding the house to reflect the owners taste and provide appropriate space for the owners artwork and modern furniture
• organizing children’s play and toy storage spaces.
• Increase storage space throughout house
• Expanding to the extent possible within the limits imposed by flood zone issues and City zoning ordinance.

The project work included:
• Adding a master suite with related space to function initially as a nursery;
• Remodeling/adding space to accommodate the new living room, kitchen, and dining areas
• Looking into expanding the dining room or relocating it according to how the house layout gets configured.
• Adding a study for the graphic designer spouse with room for two people to work. A particular criteria for the space was for the owner to be able to observe activities going on throughout the lower floor.
• Remodeling the existing bathrooms.
• Relocating/reconfiguring the laundry room.
• Changing all interior finishes including flooring, wall covering, paint etc
• Pushing toward the back in order to add space for the living room, new kitchen and dining.
• Specifying and ensuring construction materials and finishes met sustainability requirements to achieve Certification by Build it Green.
