Remodel
The project involved architectural design services for the addition to, and remodeling of, an existing one-story ranch-style home with detached guest room and carport. The home is located in a neighborhood of similar homes and is the residence of empty nesters with an extended family that visits often.

Retaining the harmony and integration of the home with the lot were serious concerns for the owners. New detailing was to match the existing or other examples of the neighborhood style. Fencing and gates and exterior finishes were detailed to unify the architecture of the site.

The design goals and objectives included:
• Remodeling and adding to the bedroom wing of the house to create an improved master suite with his/hers closets, a dressing and sitting area and an enlarged bathroom;
• Remodeling the entry to the house to create a more spacious entry and a usable entry closet. The existing powder room was remodeled to accommodate the closet. A new skylight and front door were included in the remodeling;
• Replacing the carport with a one-car attached garage with attendant interior storage and access to the house;
• Reconfiguring interior “public” space – the existing living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, laundry room, utility closet – to: create more of a great room feel; improve flow from the living room through the dining area to the family room; and remodel and expand the kitchen;
• Miscellaneous other improvements including:
• Replacing the existing shake roof with asphalt shingles;
• Replacing and updating the solar hot water heating system;
• Replacing the French doors at the family room and office.
• Providing distributed heating and hot water systems for the wings;
• Installing new insulation at new construction and elsewhere where practical;
• Adding stucco to brick chimney to unify architecture
• Specifying and ensuring construction materials and finishes met sustainability requirements to achieve Certification by Build it Green. The house received a 258 point Green Point Rating.
