Contemporary kitchens (post 1980s) are characterized by sleek lines and hidden cabinetries. Minimal texture, simple volumes, no details. It’s been nearly half a century now so I’m always challenged by how to make kitchens feel fresh and exciting beyond just changing color and texture.

I saw this in a showroom, and a client is now getting ready to complete this post-modern take. It deconstructed the very heavy, dark set of upper cabinetry and in doing so, lightens the visual load.
The glass uppers over the dark bottom half of the upper cabinetry make the mass feel even lighter. I love this tweak on the familiar—and of course, I'm also in love with that extra high 18" backsplash!
