walk-in closet for Master bedroom
Comments (6)No pics, since we haven't broken ground yet, but I've devoted a scary amount of thought to this issue. The entire design process for me has been one of confronting the truth about who I really am, not who I'd like to pretend to be: though I love a tidy house, I need to be very careful to make keeping it that way as easy as possible. Otherwise, I tend to let things pile up until setting them to rights is difficult and depressing. Clothes are the only thing that ever messes up my bedroom, so I don't want any clothes storage there: I want a closet big enough to hold EVERYTHING. I only need a tiny bit of 'full height' hanging space, so all the rest can have upper and lower rods. For sweaters [I'm a cashmere/dale of norway junky] I want open shelves, spaced close enough together that I'm not tempted to pile one atop another[I always make a mess if they are]. One [or two] of those trouser hanger assemblies made up of multiple horizontal rods on a vertical axis. Not only hold more for the space they take up, but less mess since you don't have seperate hangers for each pair. Just a few drawers for 'small clothes', but some kind of multi-basket system for dirty laundry so I can tell at a glance not just when I need to wash, but what. A bench of course, and some wall hooks for stuff like robes. And no doors: though those fully fitted closets look very nice, I know that I'd almost never bother to close them. Oh, and one of those lights that turn themselves on when you walk in. Natural light would be nice as well....See MoreConcern with master bedroom closet size - Please help
Comments (10)I would be hesitant to give up room in my bath area. If you shrink it to 7 x 5 you'll be limited in the size tub/shower you can use and I'd think you'd want the largest you could put in there since this is the MBR. As the other poster mentioned, moving all the plumbing will quickly add up, and moving a toilet is usually the last thing you want to do. Whether you have a slab or crawlspace under your home will be the determining factor. I've included a drawing of how I'd probably do the area. Our last home was similar to yours and limited in closet area, so DH used the spare bedroom and hall bath as his dressing area. I would take the small closet space in your BR and add it to the hall bath closet.......then one of you can use it as your personal closet. If you don't need a double sink, the other option would be to reverse the closet/sink layout I've drawn That would then give you more closet space in the BR but you'd have only one sink. The double sink wall shouldn't need to be there for privacy.......isn't there a door at the entrance to your BR? If you really wanted to get carried away with a remodel........and the hall bath isn't needed by others........you could absorb that bathroom into your plans and make a large bedroom/bath suite! :)...See MoreWiden master closet by stealing space from son's bedroom?
Comments (7)Thanks for your opinions! My son's room in the house we're temporarily living in right now is actually the exact size we're proposing reducing his bedroom to, so we can now visualize the space (it's oriented differently, but the dimensions are almost exactly the same). It's definitely not a large space, but does not feel too cramped by any means (my childhood bedroom was smaller!) The first thing I did was to go over the proposed new layout with my son and he actually quite likes it (he has sensory issues and always prefers a more enclosed space to a more expansive one, which is why he chose that room as his room), so that part is not actually a concern for us. It also seems like we can widen our master closet without needing to take quite a full 2-feet from our son's room, so that will help. I'm not really concerned about how big the room is relative to the other rooms, I'm more concerned about the size of the room as a standalone and if there are any practical layout or other issues I haven't concerned in the proposed new layout. Thanks!...See MoreMaster bedroom remodel- Master closet location dilemma
Comments (14)Keep playing with drawing til something makes sense. I tried to sketch something out, let's see if I can attach it. Did you want to add a tub, or just a bigger shower? If windows can be added to the left wall, it would really add more possibilities! I made the bigger closet skinny so the window light still comes in. This loses the hall closets so it may need more work. I am not a big fan of the hall between the closets, it was my attempt to keep the window. Either of the closets where the master was could be removed to be a sitting area or a desk area. Obviously I am not a professional. I just like looking at and thinking about floor plans. I am sure others will jump in to improve my sketch by criticizing it lol. I left the toilet and one sink in place. I think the shower could use the same drain and it would not be too bad to extend the pipes to make it bigger, and add the second sink. The entry point is a bit crowded but I was having trouble adding a second sink if I made the bathroom door by the closets....See MoreDebp
