How to find out if your doctor is bored certified.

Although most doctors in the U.S. are board certified in at least one area of expertise, such as family medicine or internal medicine, a doctor can practice medicine without being board certified..

I’ll try to communicate a situation that I know about where somebody was seeing a doctor that was practicing medicine but without any apparent board certification. This, even though a call to that doctor’s office said that the doctor was board certified because one “cannot practice medicine without being board certified.“ But this is not accurate. In general, a doctor must be licensed to practice medicine in the state where they practice. That is the minimum requirement.

I’m posting this based on my research this week. I am not going to verify that every single thing in this is accurate so you should do your own research; but from what I understand, this is how things stand.

There are two certification boards, whereby doctors can pass a board exam and be certified within a specialty. If anybody knows of others, please communicate that.

One board I called and got information from directly. The other I went online and filled out the relevant fields (approximately four). Anybody can look this information up online.

  1. ABPS — American Board of Physician Specialties.
  2. ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties, I believe that’s what this stands for) you can go online to their website for certification and inquire. This organization is I think larger and has larger enrollment than the organization above. A doctor can be board certified from either organization.

I have gone to doctors who are board certified in two specialties — internal medicine and gastroenterology, for example.

Being board certified is a good thing. And doctors who are board certified are proud to put that in their profile.

If I have time, I will relate a situation that caused me concern, and prompted me to look up this information. Medical care is one of the most expensive endeavors for us, so it should be easy for the man on the street to get all information about a medical practitioner — the more information the better.

Please feel free to express your opinions on this. We all want to learn and be as informed as possible. Don’t you agree?
