What's Your Top 5 Most Wanted Plants?
Comments (68)I've had my flower beds for 10 years and I'm going to have to google most of what everyone is wanting just to see what they are and what they look like. My top 5 right now is 1. Spuria Irises any color. 2. Oriental Lilies 3. Asiatic Lilies 4. Flowers that bloom until the first frost. 5. Different color day lilies I have no idea the names of the ones I have. I've been trying to put a name to them but so many of them look alike. I am cleaning off my hillside and have black raspberry vines if anyone is interested. I also have Purple Wisteria, old fashioned purple lilac bushes, and a weeping willow tree that I can take starts from get them rooted and send. I don't like taking starts from those unless someone wants them. I've never shipped a plant so I may need some assistance on how the best way is to ship....See Morewhat are your top 5 favorites..and why
Comments (23)Monarda - all if them! This year I winter-sowed 4 species of Monarda, 3 of which I had never heard of before researching seeds to buy. Beautiful and the pollinators and hummingbirds love them. Phlox - again all of them - growing many species and cultivars, but one of my outstanding performers is Phlox paniculata 'Nora Leigh' - beautiful variegated foliage, very vigorous, never gets mildew Agastache 'Blue Fortune' - very pretty spires, and the Bumble bees just go nuts over this plant. The Blue Fortune I bought at a nursery doesn't reseed at all, but a couple other Agastache from a plant swap last year that look like Blue Fortune have reseeded like crazy this Spring. Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' - this is a HUGE plant but what a beauty! Lots of lemon yellow flowers that the bees love. I've got 4 of them and they literally make a hedge they're so large, and they spread rhizomatically into these massive clumps. Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' - really nice foliage, and I love the haze of little white flowers at the end of the season. I'm growing so many new plants from winter-sowing and some I purchased on sale last November (including Baptisia 'Carolina Moonlight' and 'Prairie Twilight Blues' which are sending out buds), that I may have some new favorites popping up this year! :)...See Moreunobtainium - list your top 5
Comments (58)Tlbean, now I know the tree you are talking about. I've seen them at biltmore estate and thought about planting one, but I would rather buy locally than mail order. I guess top on my list of redbuds would be Cercis Canadensis 'Floating Clouds', it's a really nice variegated cultivar. I'm also on look out for 'rising sun', 'merlot', and 'ruby falls'....See MoreWhat are your Top 5/10 advice for a newbie ?
Comments (66)Val, you, of course, may use any medium you decide upon. But if I may, I would suggest a a "seed starter" mix. Along with the issues of porosity, potting soils can harbor and support fungi. Established seedlings can usually ward-off such problematic issues, but those newly germinated cannot. If all you can get is potting soil, it can work, but it will mean quite a bit more attention on your part, and seed starter is easy to find or build yourself. As far as fertilizers, the choices cannot really be narrowed down until you decide if such personal preferences - like growing organically - is important to your lifestyle and methods. I don't really do containers, so I'll not post on that issue. Good luck....See More
