When Our 'Kids' Are Middle-Aged

Oh, wow. My bouncing baby boy (54) needs both knees replaced. Why I am I so surprised?

Seems like only yesterday that he sprained one knee playing paintball with a friend in HS.

He has a very high pain tolerance, which probably kept him from admitting how bad this is. Last week one knee 'popped' while he was 'Bowling With the Dads' -- a group that started when their kids were in grammar school. His primary doctor examined both knees and found little cartiledge left in either one.

He'll have to rely on DGS (20) to drive him and to transport DGD to HS. Our DIL is a teacher.

Theirs is a typical old Chicago house -- two-story; showers second floor and basement, and a half bath first floor. Den/BR first floor. Conversations about moving to a simpler house are suddenly too late.

My hip replacements were 2004-06. I believe knees are much more difficult. I hope that high pain tolerance will be useful!

Time Flies!
