Comments (4)hi cloudy, I suspected 'mother of vinegar" too- but I am using pasterized, or whatever they do to it that kills that off, vinegar. Is it raw vinegar that has the mother? It definately looked bacterial. I don't know how it would have gotten in there- It was walmart great value vinegar. It was not cloudy when I made it- the mustard seeds never touched the vinegar I saved- nothing was in it but water, vinegar, salt and sugar. Comments (8)It's not bacteria that react with the anode rods. It's more likely the naturally occurring sulfates that are in your water that become hydrogen sulfide gas in your water heater. It could be that you have the hydrogen sulfide in your water and the heat just causes it to exit the water to the air where you can smell it. If you have hydrogen sulfide in your cold water as well, that could be caused by bacteria. You need to get your water tested to know for sure. Take 1- liter samples of your cold and hot water to a local independent lab to determine sulfur, sulfates, hydrogen sulfide, iron, hardness, pH, TDS. Ask the lab how to collect the samples to ensure accurate results. Then you can determine your best course of action because you will knur where your problem is. If it is purely a hot water hubby the powered anode is probably a good solution. However, the most reliable solution will likely be to remove the sulfur compounds from your water. Jim, The project was setup for the complete PWTA group of tests on the raw water and a test of the treated water (pH, Fe, Mn) was performed for free. This approach and this group of testing were established by some of NJÂs finest scientists at the NJDEP when the PWTA law was being formulated in 2001/2002. Additionally, this test group is the current state-of-the-art requirement for all South Jersey if you are selling a property with a well or have a new well put in. The testing is complex and certain tests are done with expensive laboratory instrumentation. The testing is done in a "certified" laboratory setting with substantial QA/QC checks to ensure accurate data. We have invested about $500,000 in our laboratory building and instrumentation, not top mention our technical staff, to perform this group of tests. Please understand you DID get your moneyÂs worth. Unfortunately, there are many tests that can be performed on water matrices in addition to the PWTA group and each test is a stand alone analytical method  we do not have a "magic box" in which we pour water that produces analytical results. I hope your understand this. We can always add additional testing on top of the PWTA group. We, unfortunately, need to charge extra for these tests. I did go back to your initial raw water sample and performed two (2) tests (no charge) that I think will help you: Hardness is 7 grains or 119 mg/L. Comments (6)There are good reasons for calling the gas companies first. They don't charge you to investigate and there is great danger in gas leaks. I'd call natural gas and propane oderants more like "skunk" smell. The chemicals used are closely related (mercaptans) to what skunks produce rather than HS.
