Got a Publisher's Clearing House scam call yesterday.

This guy was really good at his job. I just don't know how he can sleep at night. It was clear they were targeting older people. When I told him I never had any dealings with the PCH, he rattled off a list of things that qualified me to be entered in their contest. These included my advanced age, my shopping habits, and the fact that I pay my bills promptly. This made no sense, but it didn't matter. He was very convincing.

Obviously, I wasn't convinced, but it made me angry to hear how good he was at sounding warm and caring and honest. He told me I'd receive a check for $8.5 million, plus a $4,000 grocery gift card, a $7.5K gas card, and a Mercedes. He asked if I went to church, as he thought I might want to donate some. He named a date when all this would be delivered, and asked if I'd be alone to receive it. I hope they weren't planning to target my house.

We didn't get to the part where he asked for money, or my bank account number, because when I'd heard more than enough I cut the call short. I tried to report it, but PCH's reporting number was automated--and apathetic once I responded "no" to "Did you lose money as a result of this scam?"

When I looked up PCH's number I came upon a news item about an elderly gentleman who lost $182,000 to a scam like this one.
