Phone calls from The power company (Scam)

I use You Mail to stop some of my spam calls. I got one today in email form telling me I had an hour before they were turning my power off. My bill isn't even due yet.

Have you gotten any of these calls? When will life go back to normal?

This is normal. Has been happening for years. You are lucky that this is the first one that you have received. One of the reasons I check the websites of the utilities a couple of times a week. I also check my bank accounts even though they are good about stopping charges if they think they are suspicious. I had mine stopped last weekend when I went to two asian grocery stores and a Vietnamese bakery. Luckily I knew to just call to have it cleared.

Sorry I edited couple of times a day to couple of times a week although I do check to see how much energy I use almost daily.

I agree with maifleur. I'm not sure how the current pandemic problems and the receipt of phony phone calls could be related in any way.

My kitchen work isn't finished, and there is one issue that rankles me. My GC told me I'd "love" puck lights under the cabs, as do all his clients. Before he started work I told him over the phone that I was considering fluorescents instead. He dismissively said they were more expensive and changed the subject. I guess I expected to revisit the type of UCL before they went in. Suddenly I had low-voltage wiring and 5 xenon puck lights. The pucks gave off harsh shadows, slightly heated the shelf where I keep my chocolate chips and when on resulted in horrible radio interference. After a few days, I told him I wanted them changed. He got pissy, then called me back to apologize and the wiring and lights were changed. I went out and bought new lights myself and he charged me extra to replace the wiring. My KD is furious about me paying extra. But I'm choosing to bide my time. There's still work that needs to be done that I want done right and not under a cloud of resentment. I still owe him money. When everything else is done to my satisfaction, we'll discuss the pucks. Depending on how I feel, I'm even prepared to let the $260 extra go by the wayside. While it irritates me, I need to put it into perspective.

I get only a few ... but quite often I'm not in the house - like, now, when I'm at the library, yakking to you folks ... or with the Old Farts at one church, drinking coffee ... or in a group at the other church, discussing articles in our church-related magazine. Or, now that it's (soon to be) summer ... out in the garden. The main ones are from the lady wanting to get me a better rate on my credit card: I tell her that sooner or later she's going to want my credit card number ... and NO BODY gets that over the phone (certainly not on unsolicited calls). The other is the guy who says there's a problem, in my computer ... and I tell him that I haven't been connected to the internet for a couple of years ... and isn't he ashamed of himself, taking money for being a bare-faced liar! o j

I've received the IRS scam calls. I don't engage their ridiculousness, but would love to feign becoming hysterical when they tell me that the local police will come and arrest me if I don't pay, and then pretend that I'm having a heart attack and tell them to call 911. Then just go silent and see how long it takes for them to hang up.

I have donotcall and the phone rings once and then stops. If it rings more than once I look at caller ID and if I don't recognize the number or name, it goes to voice mail. We were expecting a call from Apple almost two years ago and coincidentally got one of these scammers. Thankfully nothing happened but not because my husband was smart. As he talked with this guy with an accent and started doing stuff on the computer I googled the number. Guess what?.. Nigeria. I've only gotten one call since then and I let him have it.

I found the calls actually decreased to almost a full stop during the stay at home 3 months here. It was heavenly. They started up again now, though, so I have turned off the ringer on my phone and check for messages a couple of times a day if the light is blinking. Most everyone calls my cell to actually reach me. I never give the number to anyone I suspect would pass it on or sell it and never get any robot/scam calls on it.

No need to give it to someone that would use it if you have ever done a search for your name there are several companies that for a price will provide that information to anyone. Companies can buy lists using many criteria, address, age, sex, buying trends and those are just a small number of ways a company can request lists.

There's no need to buy lists, it's all done by software over the internet

For a given area code, it's like this as an example - 555-0001, then 555-0002, then 555-0003, etc.

We got a call just like that, the answering machine picked it up and they left that same message. We reported them to our Electric Company, sure that did no good but thought it was a good idea since they were using our power company's name on the message.

A few months ago my and my dh were looking at our credit report and found several charges from random electric companies in Texas that had been turned over to collection agencies. We got a hold of all of them and were able to get them all taken off, but it was a mess.
