Another Phone Scam

We got a call on a Sunday with the user ID showing up as "SSI". Of course I didn't answer it, but I hope there isn't anyone out there stupid enough to. Can you imagine all the personal data they could get from someone who thinks they might be eligible for SSI and would give them all their info.?

You're only half right there sushipup1. SSI is Supplemental Security Income, yes, but it is NOT disability. RSDI (Retirement Survivors And Disability Insurance) is the "disability" program. It's sometimes referred to as SSD or SSDI. SSI is an income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes) designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. People on "disability" are able to also apply for SSI if they meet the requirements but it's very different from the disability coverage.

There's so many scumballs out there. I think phones should have a button on them whereby you can push it to activate dumping a pail of water on them and then give a 50,000 volt zap to telemarketers and scammers. Voltage would increase every time they call someone. That would cut down on the lowlife calls from these "poor people who are just trying to make a living and feed their starving children..." to whom we should talk so nice and considerate!

Annoying solicitation calls have become more frequent, that's for sure. Be proactive, there is telephone equipment (I have a Panasonic cordless unit as one example) and also services from phone line providers that will block unwanted calls.

The challenge is that many change their Caller ID numbers frequently but others do stay consistent. Using any or even several of these alternatives together will cut down on the calls you don't want to receive.

I answered the phone because I had been left a detailed message about a possible DEA investigation that might involve me. Normally, I don't answer if I don't recognize the number, but I was a little concerned about this. The caller was very threatening and abusive from the beginning. I never ordered any medicine online, except through my prescription plan and medicine for my dog for which I had a prescription. He knew my name and address. Even though I was totally innocent, I felt a little scared, and had I been someone a little more naive, I, too, might have been tempted to pay a fine just to get them off my back. He got no information from me, although he pressed for a lot...where do you work, you know you're going to lose your job,etc. Heinous people. I reported into the DEA hotline.

Well, next time you guys get a phone call from someone claiming to be from IRS and asking for money, here's what you should do: 1. If you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS. They can help you set up a payment arrangement. 2. If you get a call and you know it's a scam, refer the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. 3. File a complaint with the FTC through their website. 4. Expose the phone scam by reporting it to Callercenter.com. Submit a complaint and warn others. Remember that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers to discuss tax issue and demand immediate payment.

You seriously didn't get that it was a scam right from the first line out of his mouth? Stores automatically entering you in a multi-million dollar sweepstakes with a bonus car on top of it and they don't even advertise it? Wow. Although I would not have answered the phone most likely, and I'd have been falling down laughing when he told me something like that. And I'd be choosing a mauve/eggplant plaid convertible. See what he said. Actually, what most people don't realize is that in a situation like they they did give the caller at least several pieces of personal information all of which are highly prized by scammers. First a confirmation that the phone number was active. That just raised the value of the number when it's sold to other scammers. Secondly, that they phone is answered by a person. Third that the names associated to the number are accurate. Beyond that I'm not sure what was given whether willingly or inadvertently but rest assured this number will get called again and the information sold over and over again. If I get a call from an unknown number, well first I seldom would answer it unless I was expecting something and it was an area code I recognized, but had I answered and they ask the name I never give it without knowing who is calling. Never confirm your identity without knowing who's calling. There's a lot of ways to get your info but confirming it is their first objective.

I get those all the time. And the ones that say I have a warrant out and i could settle it with a payment of XYZ. I used to mess with them and say " Oh good, i feel so much more at home in prison." But the amusement wore out quickly. They have begun spoofing local numbers to try to get me to answer. I got the privacystar app, which has helped some, but not enough. Now, if i dont know the number, i just reject the call and block the number. Scum of the earth parasites. Horrible, painful, inhumane things should befall all of them.

I have never had the SSI call, but I did get two calls back to back, leaving the message that the IRS will e filing a lawsuit against me and I should call them immediately. Just for the heck of it, I call but the number was busy. No call backs yet....

FYI: SSI is Supplemental Security Income, or Disability. SSA is Social Security. Not that it makes any difference to the crooks.

The IRS calls are so pathetic that it's laughable when someone whose first language is pathetically, obviously not English, is telling me the "local police" will show up at my door if I don't pay up.

My mother had a friend who received the IRS scam call shortly after his wife passed away. Thinking that it had something to do with their joint taxes, and being in a befuddled state of mind, he fell for it.

I don't usually receive scam calls on my cell phone, but answered one the other day to find the guy had the typical thick accent, telling me that Microsoft had detected a virus on my computer. I thought about stringing him along, but after asking him to repeat himself a few times, I finally told him that everyone in the US knew about his stupid scam. And hung up.

Good old fashioned Police whistle works real well. And much smaller than an air horn. I keep mine right next to the phone. I gave up answering our land line, it's all junk and reporting to Do Not Call doesn't seem to help.

How sad. Throw the Golden Rule out the window, for these people who would probably do other jobs if they could.

If you do that, you'd better hope they don't write your number down and return the favor when they get home from work.

I was thinking of the ridiculous whistle suggestion but rudeness is also sad.

I feel sorry for those who go through their days always on the verge of exploding with anger. It's rarely necessary and rarely appropriate.
