Another Telephone Scam

I got a call last week. It was a bit unnerving because the called had my whole name almost right, and my age. He'd called to inform me that I had won a merchants award. He claimed that if I had shopped any of the 4 stores he named in the past 6 months that my name ha been entered automatically each time I made a purchase. He then says i have won 2.5 million dollars and that his company will be paying the income tax. The prize also included a Mercedes Benz convertible and had me choose a color. He tries to collect as much personal information as he can - says its needed to complete the paper work. At last, the hook came. He tried to get me to go to Walmart and purchase a $780 money order to be sent to a particular address. Says its processing fee that I will get back. The receipt is needed to verify who I am on delivery of the prize. He also noted my reluctance to cooperate and suggested that I call one of two 877 numbers to speak with one of their corporate lawyers. I told him that I was terminated the call and hung up.

A quick check showed that the 2 phone numbers were Jamaican.

Guess what, he's persistent. The phone rang again. He trying very hard. I said no, Teen minutes later, he calls again. I let the answering machine answer and he hangs up immediately. No recording for him! The messages stopped.

omg..at least my phone says jamaica...and I know not to answer...finally did last year and pretended to cry and that my fil (who they ask for) was dead....they actually left me alone for over 6 months...but now they're back, and he really did pass...

You seriously didn't get that it was a scam right from the first line out of his mouth? Stores automatically entering you in a multi-million dollar sweepstakes with a bonus car on top of it and they don't even advertise it? Wow. Although I would not have answered the phone most likely, and I'd have been falling down laughing when he told me something like that. And I'd be choosing a mauve/eggplant plaid convertible. See what he said.

Actually, what most people don't realize is that in a situation like they they did give the caller at least several pieces of personal information all of which are highly prized by scammers. First a confirmation that the phone number was active. That just raised the value of the number when it's sold to other scammers. Secondly, that they phone is answered by a person. Third that the names associated to the number are accurate. Beyond that I'm not sure what was given whether willingly or inadvertently but rest assured this number will get called again and the information sold over and over again.

If I get a call from an unknown number, well first I seldom would answer it unless I was expecting something and it was an area code I recognized, but had I answered and they ask the name I never give it without knowing who is calling. Never confirm your identity without knowing who's calling. There's a lot of ways to get your info but confirming it is their first objective.

That's the ones that either get ignored ... ... or I send them junkmailforall22@yahoo.ca. I've had several such. Several telling me that I've won a huge amount in a lottery (usually in the U.K.). Plus well over 100 (at the email address with which I connect to Gardenweb) from "bankers" or other "financial" people wanting help to move multiplied millions from some location (often somewhere in Africa, originally Nigeria) to my bank account ... and usually they offer me 30% or so, plus another 10% allocated for expenses. If I'd accepted each, probably I'd be at least almost a bilionaire, by now! How would I ever manage to know how to manage such an amount of money? Plus - I've had a number asking that I be their company's rep here, to collect money from their customers for them and forward it ... less my 10%. I haven't decided what they're up to ... maybe have people send phony money transfers, and then after I've sent money, finding that the original paper was scrap. Or maybe into laundering money. You're only half right there sushipup1. SSI is Supplemental Security Income, yes, but it is NOT disability. RSDI (Retirement Survivors And Disability Insurance) is the "disability" program. It's sometimes referred to as SSD or SSDI. SSI is an income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes) designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. People on "disability" are able to also apply for SSI if they meet the requirements but it's very different from the disability coverage. There's so many scumballs out there. I think phones should have a button on them whereby you can push it to activate dumping a pail of water on them and then give a 50,000 volt zap to telemarketers and scammers. Voltage would increase every time they call someone. That would cut down on the lowlife calls from these "poor people who are just trying to make a living and feed their starving children..." to whom we should talk so nice and considerate!

We no longer answer the phone when it’s from a number that we don’t know. Our thinking is that if it’s someone that really needs to get in touch with us they’ll leave a message. Yesterday my wife decided to play along with one of these callers. The caller ID read “Quebec”. My wife: “Bon jour!” Caller: “Grandma?” Wife: “Jayme? Jayme, is that you?” (My wife’s not a grandma and doesn’t know anyone named Jayme.) Caller: “Yes” “Grandma, I’m in a little bit of trouble. The other night I was riding in the car with Paul and his friend and we got pulled over by the Police. I didn’t know it but Paul’s friend had drugs in the car and we all got arrested. I’m going to need some money to get out of jail.” Wife: “Jayme, I told you that I’d never have anything to do with you if you ever did drugs again.” Caller: “But I wasn’t doing any drugs Grandma, it was Paul’s friend!” Wife: Hangs up. Immediate call back and she blocks the number on her phone. Two days later and she’s still chuckling about it.

The product I was using was Norton 360, I've always presumed they are on the up-and-up. But I got tired of all the come-ons to purchase Lifelock and a more secure router from them after paying them quite a bit for protection. It was constant. Kudzu9, awhile back I posted here asking if Windows Defender was good enough. You advised me that Avast Free was very good and gave me instructions (so complete and easy to follow, thank you) on how to switch when my contract was up. So when the contract was going to end I did the switch a couple of days before it ended. Everything went fine, I had uninstalled Norton before I downloaded the Avast program. So 2 days after the contract was to end was when I got the phone call. I just think it's quite a coincidence. I'm just wondering if it's a scare tactic. The robot that left the message never gave the company name. Mayfleur01, I don't know what you are referring to concerning ACH, what is that?

I no longer have an answering machine hooked to my home phone and do not answer it unless I recognize the number.

You were too kind to let him ramble on for so long in the first call!

Truly, I've gotten to the point where I don't answer any number I don't know or isn't a name I want to pick up and talk to on my Caller #ID.

I have an answering machine. If it's so important, they know what to do.

Phone scams have become epidemic , especially targeting the elderly. Like mimi, I seldom answer the phone unless the caller ID identifies the caller, and if it ends up being someone I do know, then my voice mail will pick it up and I can all them back

And it irritates me no end that I get them on my cell now. I block and clear numbers but they just keep coming. There are no teeth at all in the law, so no point to the law.

Good job, jemdandy! And thanks for the heads up. Obviously some people fall for these scams or they wouldn't keep trying them.
