Another Scam

Just thought I would post this to alert others...

When I logged in to my email this morning, there was a message claiming to be from PayPal confirming my purchase of a photo subscription service that I had no knowledge of. When I inspected the message, it was from some address that had nothing to do with PayPal.

The message said that I had 7 days to cancel the subscription if I wanted to. All I had to do was click on one of the links in the message to log in to my PayPal account ;-). If I had done that, I am sure that it would have taken me to a fake PayPal site in order to steal my log in info and ripoff money from my accounts. I separately logged in to my account and confirmed that there was no such charge. Then I forwarded a copy of the scam message to the PayPal Fraud Department (review@paypal.com).

I do the two part authorization on PayPal - they send me a cell phone message wanting a response before logging in. I had two in a row suddenly the other day, which I didn't authorize... then later two emails from LYFT taxi service in Spanish .. I didn't even bother to translate but I assume someone tried to used LYFT with my PayPal. Was it some kind of error someone made on their email address ,, or was it a crook.. guess I'll never know.

Forward them to spoof@paypal.com instead of "review" ... spoof is for fishing attempts and they will deal with it almost immediately.

I happened to be trolling the dollar store today, and I found this on the shelve, 2$ for 5L worth. I grabbed one just to test & see, but I wonder for others who may be familiar with this, if it seems to be another scam? It appears to be more for in-door plants.

That's the ones that either get ignored ... ... or I send them junkmailforall22@yahoo.ca. I've had several such. Several telling me that I've won a huge amount in a lottery (usually in the U.K.). Plus well over 100 (at the email address with which I connect to Gardenweb) from "bankers" or other "financial" people wanting help to move multiplied millions from some location (often somewhere in Africa, originally Nigeria) to my bank account ... and usually they offer me 30% or so, plus another 10% allocated for expenses. If I'd accepted each, probably I'd be at least almost a bilionaire, by now! How would I ever manage to know how to manage such an amount of money? Plus - I've had a number asking that I be their company's rep here, to collect money from their customers for them and forward it ... less my 10%. I haven't decided what they're up to ... maybe have people send phony money transfers, and then after I've sent money, finding that the original paper was scrap. Or maybe into laundering money. You're only half right there sushipup1. SSI is Supplemental Security Income, yes, but it is NOT disability. RSDI (Retirement Survivors And Disability Insurance) is the "disability" program. It's sometimes referred to as SSD or SSDI. SSI is an income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes) designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. People on "disability" are able to also apply for SSI if they meet the requirements but it's very different from the disability coverage. There's so many scumballs out there. I think phones should have a button on them whereby you can push it to activate dumping a pail of water on them and then give a 50,000 volt zap to telemarketers and scammers. Voltage would increase every time they call someone. That would cut down on the lowlife calls from these "poor people who are just trying to make a living and feed their starving children..." to whom we should talk so nice and considerate!

Hi Lyban. I'm a regular on the Kitchen Table and Cooking Forums. I've used FBP for a number of years, and it works great. I see absolutely no ads whatsoever, and you can also check off the things you want to hide. e.g. people with new friends; games; trending topics; etc. I don't care about any of those things. FB automatically sets your newsfeed to Top Stories, so you might be limited in what your feed is showing. I have FBP set to Most Recent. These are just a few things you can do to personalize FB. I wouldn't be without it, personally. Here's a little 'funny' regarding the recent outage. This breaks me up!

Thanks. I sent it to review@paypal.com after being told to do this by a PayPal phone rep. Within the next several hours I got 2 messages back from their fraud folks thanking me, etc., so probably your suggested address or mine is equally good.

Update...

Got another, similar bogus email saying I'd signed up for another subscription. This time PayPal directed me to send it to spoof@paypal.com, as lazy_gardens suggested above.

Those scams are annoying. If the email address looks sort of legit, I always copy and paste the exact wording used in quotes and Google it first. Results usually confirm complaints of phishing or scam.

I do that, too, just out of perverse curiousity ;-)

The particular scam I first posted about must be trending with scammers as I got another one -- this time as a text message on my phone -- yesterday. Same language in the body of the text and a bogus hot link that they wanted me to click. The only thing different was that it wasn't from "PayPal" but from the "company" where I supposedly made the charge.

I don't even have a PayPal account and I still get the spam message. I'm also still waiting for my $10,000,000 check from the Prince Of Nairobi.

I got a robocall last night that started out telling me my Windows license is running out. I guess some people must fall for this crap or they would quit calling.
