Popolo Shoreditch (London) - one of the 10 best restaurants worldwide

Having just returned from three weeks in Europe, we sampled tons of food in some amazing restaurants. One however, is now on my list of the 10 best restaurants in the world. While my cooking skills are average, my tastebuds have been honed to perfection over the last 60+ years and a dozen trips to Europe. I don't add a restaurant to this list unless I plan on going out of my way to eat there again.

Popolo Shoreditch (London) was such a wonderful dining experience that we were so enthralled by the food that the only photo I took was of Jon, the owner and head chef. The other photos are some of the dishes we watched him prepare for us, but truthfully, I'd rather not post food photos and spoil the surprise for anyone who decides to eat there.

The downstairs is the kitchen and bar-type seating for a dozen people. You sit in front of the chefs and watch them cook your food. All the time, they discuss the preparation, gossip with regulars, and get as much enjoyment from watching you eat as you do eating the food. There are tables upstairs as well, but the dinner requires the show and must make a reservation for the bar seats well in advance!

As I recall, the menu had 12 items. Jon suggested we choose 7 and share them. He gave us a sample of their signature dish - agnolotti – pork cheek ravioli in porcini butter sauce - after we finished the 7 we ordered.

Two of the entrees really blew me away. First was the seared tuna. As a sushi lover, I avoid seared tuna outside of a sushi bar. Most restaurants overcook it or use cheaper grades of bluefin. The seared tuna steak, umbrian lentils, green beans, rosemary dressing was the absolute best I've eaten, better than any sushi bar. The other was the Dover sole. Again, not being a fan of cooked fish, this one was a stretch, but I'm glad I ordered it and would do it again. Perfectly cooked, seasoning that complimented the fish and not overwhelmed it, melt in your mouth texture. I held the last bite in my mouth for nearly minute and refused to eat or drink anything else for several minutes after that.

Grilled asparagus that was so tender that I had to come and practice his technique several times to get it right. Every mouthful of every dish made my tastebuds dance for joy.

Dinner for the two of us, seven courses and a nice Chenin Blanc, was a bit over $300. A bargain for this quality of food.

If you live near London or ever plan a visit, put Popolo Shoreditch on your agenda. Go hungry and eat slowly. We'll be heading back there in June 2026 for my birthday dinner. I can't wait!
