Worst of the worst books you've read?

I'm so enjoying hobbitmom's best of the best books thread, so I thought I'd ask the opposite. What are the worst of the worst books you've ever read? What would you recommend others avoid?

For me, the latest for a reading challenge -- book that got bad reviews -- I read Jack Kerouac's On the Road. I hated it. If it wasn't for the reading challenge, it'd be a DNF for me. Maybe it didn't age well over time. Maybe like other cult classics, the fact that they catch on doesn't mean it's any good. But if you want to read about men travelling across the country with no aim, no money, who steal and drink and do drugs and treat women like dirt and aren't much better to each other, then this one's for you.

I too am one who hated The Great Gatsby. I didn't like it when I read it in school, so I said, maybe as an adult it would hit me differently, so I read it again. Nope. Still hated the insipid characters and was glad that, as a short book, I didn't have to spend much time with any of them.
