That is an Australian palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana Bangalow Palm), and it makes flowers/berries that looks like strands of pearls/beads. It is not a date palm. Photo was taken at the L.A. County Arboretum. Here's a photo of my Queen's Palm in Venice in bloomI've not been able to grow coconut palm trees here because they require too much heat, and our summers are very mild. We might have the wrong kind of soil as well.

@chartreuse scorpion, when we went to Ocracoke in 2011, the Outer Banks highway to Hatteras was still washed out from damage by hurricane Irene. The only access was by a 2 1/2 hour ferry from the mainland, so that’s how we got on the island. Very few tourists. It was really nice.
