December Reading--Last Books Read in 2016
Comments (111)Carolyn, I read a couple some years ago. I must check and see if my library has reprints. I am reading my books slowly at present, there seems to be so many other things to do, like dropping off to sleep! My D gave me a small CD player for Xmas with handy top buttons. Just right for listening to recorded favourite books. I have been accumulating some in case of being confined to bed or having the eye operation for cataracts. I am doing a Scarlett O'Hara on that!...See MoreJanuary 2024 - What are you reading now?
Comments (88)Just finished Lucy Foley's The Guest List. I don't usually read or enjoy thrillers, so thriller fans might want to ignore my comments. I thought it seemed pretty unoriginal, and some of the scenes were a bit of a stretch. For example, when a male character is confronted by a female character outdoors on a dark, stormy night, he complains that she is shining her phone flashlight in his face so that she can see him, but he can't see her. Umm... we know from the previous paragraph that he also has his phone out with flashlight engaged, so what's the problem, really? Anyway, this is a book club selection and I don't know quite what we will discuss except details like these. I could be wrong.......See MoreWhat are you reading? May 2024 Edition
Comments (77)Salonva - Beach Music - I haven’t thought about that book for quite awhile. It was a gift from a former fiance’ - I broke off the relationship - and never read the book. I don’t know why I didn’t read it - he and I stayed close friends (I wasn’t ready for the relationship - was too soon after I ended a previous serious relationship). I‘m sure it’s still on shelf in one of my closets. I have to have surgery 😕- and need some good books (and happened to find this post) - I am going to go find it! I also need some ”light” reads for right after surgery - if anyone has some ideas, please let me know. I like a fairly wide variety of genres - but for right after surgery, I‘ll need some suggestions that are ”lighter“ = easy on the brain (I will be taking some pretty strong pain meds for the first 3-4 weeks). Nothing depressing for right after surgery. I don’t typically read romance novels (I have read ones that have an interesting plot/setting before). The book could be funny - but doesn’t have to be. After the first few weeks, I’m open to more complex suggestions. I’m not explaining this correctly - I think that I’m so anxious about this surgery that I can’t express myself very well - which is unusual for me (my ”fun” undergrad degree was English literature - my serious one: chemical engineering + I have a juris doctorate). I am so anxious that my doctor has prescribed some anxiety meds for the two weeks prior to surgery - they make me very tired + a little fuzzy. I truly appreciate any suggestions that people care to share. If this is the wrong place for my request, please let me know - I’ll delete it. Thanks, Dani...See MoreWhat are you reading? Comments (52)I loved The Guest; I think my favorite novels feature unsympathetic protagonists- IMO more complex and interesting. One of my favorite books, read years ago and never forgotten, is “All Grown Up” by Jami Attenberg- the protagonist is messed up and confused in the ways that real people often are, and something about it just strikes me as true and wonderful. Currently, I’m reading The Talented Mr. Ripley, inspired by the masterful new series “Ripley” and the wonderful 1999 film, which I recently rewatched for perhaps the eighth time. For whatever reason I find “feel good” fiction dull, but that’s me!...See More- last month
