Petalique...he's cheerful, energetic, friendly, a sturdy dog, not a lap dog. Loves it when company comes. As a terrier, wants to chase anything that moves. Somehow he has never been much of a barker. He caught a young possum the other morning, and that was a chaotic event!

Westies are prone to skin problems. Shed very little which is good. Need periodic grooming or he is a mess.

Best to your little pup, socks! I’m always amazed at how far vet science has come to be able to treat conditions that once were just not addressed. Dental surgery, orthopedic surgery, and more.

Socks, how can he possibly be 15 already? Two of our Westies lived past 16, the last years free of skin ailments, but with sight and hearing problems. (Hah! Me too now.) Please post how he comes through the anesthesia.

Hi Chisue! Hope you and your DH are doing well. I know...15 years old! In spite of the usual old dog ailments, he loves his walks, dog friends, plays with toys, happy boy. We feel like it's worth the investment in his teeth so he won't have further problems and might live another year or two. Oh, and the vet will biopsy a lump, so fingers crossed on that!

Funny story, my friends got a Westie pup and taught him to ring a bell to go outside to potty. Now he rings the bell off and on all day, keeping them jumping up and down to let him out too much!

He went through the surgery fine. Home now, worn out. I've tried to care for his teeth over the years, brushing every day, but nevertheless he needed 7 teeth removed (dogs have over 40, so he still has some left!). They biopsied a lump, so we are hopeful that it's benign.

I'm so glad your little guy is doing well tonight, the anesthetic always such a worry. Just two weeks ago we had a 2 pt deer in the yard wearing someone's Halloween lighting on an antler, cord hanging down so far he was stepping on it. Wildlife agent said 'see if you can keep an eye on him and watch for complications because darting with medication carries its own risk!'. He was able to lose the lights himself without our help. DH has looked for them on the ground in the neighborhood but has not found them.

We'll look forward to adorable Oski's next report....

Kallie (my avatar) is 12 1/2 and needs to be scheduled for her dental surgery. She has passed all her pre-op tests. The first time we did this 2 years ago, she had 2 teeth removed and also a lump biopsy, Lump was a fatty deposi; she now has quite a few but we are not doing any biopsies, but we expect another tooth removal.

Glad to hear Oski is done and gets a good biopsy report.

@blubird It is worth getting it done so things don't get worse and the dog is not in discomfort. Oski's lump was not fatty, it was hard. Please keep us posted on Kallie's surgery.

@socks It’s 6:40 am in my neck of the woods & I just got up. One of my first thoughts was to wonder how your little Oski had fared with his dental. I needed some good news so am very happy to read Oski is home and recovering.

@KW PNW Z8 Oski slept fine last night and is doing well although not too happy about the cone he must wear.

I am with you as far as needing some good news! :-( Play some nice music, go for a walk, maybe avoid the news for now. I am in CA, same time zone with you.

The biopsied lump on his neck/jaw turned out to be salivary cancer. We'll be taking him to a specialty vet who can guide us through reasonable care and quality of life issues. We are sad, but he is 15. We'll do the best we can for him. You would not know he is sick, runs around, eats well, he is just himself at this point. At least his teeth won't be bothering him either!

@socks - I’m sorry to hear this result. Quality of life is so important as you obviously know. I learned through watching a friend care for her dog through his cancer treatments that dogs don’t suffer the same negative effects from chemo that humans do. Your specialty vet will certainly be able to talk with you about that to confirm /refute it if that kind of treatment is a viable option. I do hope that Oski has much good life yet to live and share with you.

I hope it’s not too soon to tell you about my experience with this kind of situation but I tell you about this because it was such a comfort to us. Last year we cared for our little Papillon - shown in my icon here - through her end of life condition. Not cancer but a congenital liver shunt not detected at puppy age as normally would be. Her diagnosis was a total shock to us. Her liver numbers in a pre dental blood panel were suspicious for liver issues & we did further testing at the advice of our Vet. Our Ginger was only 9. After the shock of diagnosis & several visits & more tests with an internist we established a care help plan with “Lap of Love“ at the suggestion of our Vet. Besides in home euthanasia L of L offers hospice care which we did take advantage of. It’s the best thing we could have done for our little Ginger and ourselves to help us through caring for her and knowing when it was time to make the hard decision to say goodbye. We were able to reach out to the L of L vetrinarians at any time via phone or email with questions & for help. This gave us a fast answer service we couldn’t have gotten from our long time vet & also helped avoid subjecting Ginger to repeated doctor visits just for a check up which frightened her. The hospice vet we were set up with came to our home, made assessments in a relaxed environment for Ginger & spent lots of time advising us on what to expect. We expected to have a long term relationship with her but a sudden change in Ginger changed that & we had to say goodbye. Our goal was to not have to make a fast trip to ER in a crisis situation & have to say goodbye then & with Ginger surrounded by strangers & in pain. It was such an unexpected comfort to have already met & established a bit of relationship with the Vet who made the final visit to our home. I believe L of L is a national company - their site allows a search by zip code & it has a lot of info about their services. Again, I hope this information is of some help to you either now or later. I hadn’t been aware of the hospice help aspect of in home vetrinary care & am so grateful to our regular vet for telling us about it because it was so helpful to us. Hugs to Oski.

Kw, we contacted Laps of Love and was not given any of those options. Our Fred had a tumor around his heart and had congestive heart failure.

We had arrangements with Laps on a Sunday..

But….the Friday night before Fred took a turn. We wound up going to the vet hospital where the his cardiologist was. It was 2:00 am, the hospital was quiet. We were in a private room. All in all is was peaceful and better than I expected this to be.

My 15 year golden passed away home on his at home and In hoping that for Fred.

Socks, this so hard. But I suspect you will have more time than you think with Oski.

eld...that's quite an age for a Golden. Must have been a lot of TLC to live to that age.

@eld6161 Maybe Laps has added more services since you needed them. When my Vet suggested them I immediately looked at their site, read everything & then sent their request form from their site. They called me less than an hour later. It may be that their services are location specific too in that full service not available everywhere. I’m in Vancouver WA so a good population base here & across the river in Portland, OR.

@socks I’m happy that you are okay with my sharing. Try to remember that little Oski only knows that you love him and will take care of him in the best way possible & that he’s happy living in safety and comfort with his family. 💜
